Going Global Music Summit a Big Success

Written by Wairere Iti

The Going Global Music Summit, which took place in Auckland and Wellington this week, was a big success.

The seminars were well attended by musicians, the music industry and the media. Topics included expert insight into new online platforms such as Pandora and Spotify, effective social media promotion/marketing, the changing face of indie label A&R and insider insight into making music industry connections.

NZ On Air launched a new music funding programme to invest in a greater diversity of New Zealand music.

The scheme, called Making Tracks, will contribute $2 million a year towards at least 200 new Kiwi songs 200 single track recording projects and 200 music videos a year. It replaces three previous funding schemes, which together funded 50 recording projects and 170 music videos a year. "Making Tracks is a major overhaul of our music funding. It will create more opportunity for more artists to record great songs for a wider range of New Zealand audiences," said NZ On Air chief executive Jane Wrightson.

An Audience with Mick Glossop - Feedback

Written by Wairere Iti

UK producer and engineer Mick Glossop certainly impressed 45 members of the MMF,APRA and IMNZ with his tales of working for over 30 years with artists like Van Morrison, Frank Zappa and John Lydon. An informal night of questioning from the audience gave Mick a chance to share his insights into Recording Techniques, Production values and his impression of New Zealand Music on his 2 week stay.

There was plenty of interest from MMF members in Wellington with Brendan Smyth and David Ridler of NZOA. A Really informative talk about the new funding scheme and how to go about applying. There were approximatley 22 people who attended including Craig Pearce from Phoenix Foundation and Sarah Crowe from Instrumental, some of the guys from Family Cactus, Cushla from Licorice Factory, Lisa Tomlins, Leanna from Hikoikoi, Rowan from Mercury Crowe. Thank you all for coming out on a Monday night.

PR and Media Training Seminar with Belinda Henley had our members out in droves. Belinda spoke extensively on the importance of selling yourself, how best to work with the media, interview prep, managing nerves, and the importance of planning. She also gave away a couple of insider tips.....and told some great personal stories!
