Wai reports that all of the meetings were very productive and he was able to assist members with a number of questions around touring domestically and internationally. Some general strategic queries were also covered along the way.
The seminars were well attended by musicians, the music industry and the media. Topics included expert insight into new online platforms such as Pandora and Spotify, effective social media promotion/marketing, the changing face of indie label A&R and insider insight into making music industry connections.
The scheme, called Making Tracks, will contribute $2 million a year towards at least 200 new Kiwi songs 200 single track recording projects and 200 music videos a year. It replaces three previous funding schemes, which together funded 50 recording projects and 170 music videos a year. "Making Tracks is a major overhaul of our music funding. It will create more opportunity for more artists to record great songs for a wider range of New Zealand audiences," said NZ On Air chief executive Jane Wrightson.

UK producer and engineer Mick Glossop certainly impressed 45 members of the MMF,APRA and IMNZ with his tales of working for over 30 years with artists like Van Morrison, Frank Zappa and John Lydon. An informal night of questioning from the audience gave Mick a chance to share his insights into Recording Techniques, Production values and his impression of New Zealand Music on his 2 week stay.
PR and Media Training Seminar with Belinda Henley had our members out in droves. Belinda spoke extensively on the importance of selling yourself, how best to work with the media, interview prep, managing nerves, and the importance of planning. She also gave away a couple of insider tips.....and told some great personal stories!
"Specialist music lawyer David McLaughlin (www.mclaughlinlaw.co.nz) presented a seminar on current trends in New Zealand music industry contracts. The seminar had a particular focus on record label deals (both major and indie) and how these are changing to meet the increasing challenges being faced by the music industry. Publishing, management and booking contracts were also touched on.
"Bassy" Bobs session organised by MMF at the APRA headquarters last night was informative, relaxed and fun. I loved how casual and approachable he was and I learnt alot listening to someone who has worked with some of the greats in the music business. Craig Smith
