NZOA Making Tracks 3rd Round Announced

Written by

NZ On Air released the latest results from the third round of the MakingTracks new music funding scheme.

The September list includes familiar names like Gin Wigmore, Tiki Taane, Dane Rumble(Matt and Kimmi Coleman) and even Goodshirt, with their first single since 2004. First-timers like Sharpie Crows, Wilberforces, Delaney Davidson, Gemma Copas and T54 are also well represented.

Fourteen artists will receive up to $10,000 for recording a song and making a video. A further 17 artists will receive $6,000 to make a video. That's a total of 31 projects in this funding round and 98 since MakingTracks began three months ago. The September projects were selected from a field of 128 applications.

"It's another eclectic mix of music for both mainstream and alternative audiences", says NZ On Air chief executive Jane Wrightson. "MakingTracks is about funding a wider range of music to serve varied audiences and tastes. September is about half and half mainstream and alternative," she said.

Under the MakingTracks scheme each applicant must first meet some basic eligibility criteria. Once through that gate all songs are listened to by each member of a specially-convened panel. Before the meeting each panelist chooses 25 songs they think are the best. At the panel meeting those choices are debated and the best songs chosen. Decisions are based on the broadcast, music and audience merits of the songs.

Jane Wrightson thanked the September MakingTracks panel of broadcast and music professionals, which comprised:

Andrew Szusterman, MediaWorks Radio; Auckland
Matt Barthow, FOUR; Auckland
Sean Norling, Radio One; Dunedin
Leonie Hayden, Rip It Up; Auckland
Angela Windust, Under The Radar music website; Auckland
Neil Cox, Chart; Christchurch
Jeremy McPike, York Street Recording Studio; Auckland

Online applications for the October MakingTracks funding round close at 5pm on Saturday 1 October. See here.
