Charlotte describes her music as “pop music for grown ups”, inspired by vivacious singer/songwriters like Michelle Shocked, Sinead O’Connor Ani Difranco, and Sarah McLachlan and yet sprinklings of Beth Orton and Feist.
The album was produced by Charlotte Johansen and Jon Postlethwaite with additional production by Andre Upston (Bic Runga and Anika Moa), Richard Ingamells and Michael Day. The songs were mixed by Andre Upston and mastered by Don Bartley in Sydney.
Her first independently released debut album, There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground, was recorded in Toronto, Canada in 2002 and was followed up in 2005 by Yes Charlotte, also recorded in Canada while she was there to play at North by North East music festival.[NXNE].
Since then Charlotte has been concentrating on raising her daughter with her husband in West Auckland, where she has continued to hone her songwriting craft and develop her latest offering, 'upon waking…dream'.
“I wrote the title about 15 years ago, but I didn’t actually write the song until last year. I knew what it was about but perhaps I needed to grow and experience life to really understand it. To me 'upon waking...dream' is about having the courage to follow your heart and do what you love”.
Unfortunately Charlotte had her Auckland album release party last week at the Bacco Room , which was a huge success. However she is off to play a show in New Plymouth this weekend so if anyone is in New Plymouth from MMF please come along and join us at the Matinee Bar , 69 Devon Street West, New Plymouth,. Show starts at 8pm.
