After gaining a music scholarship to an English Boarding school, Simon achieved Grade 8 trumpet with distinction. However, his interests lay in Rock ‘n’ Roll and he was in several bands through school and University playing keyboards and earning extra money as a cocktail pianist.
At university he studied sound engineering but his passion lay in discovering new artists. He talked his way into a management company in London as their bookkeeper but after it became obvious he wasn’t an accountant, he went to work for free at Island Records, which led to them employing him and soon after he started scouting for them.
He went on to do A&R at GUT and Telstar Records until, after being fired for the forth time, he decided to leave the business. At almost exactly that moment KT Tunstall, who he had first seen five years previously and had loosely been working with ever since, asked him to manage her and he went on to do this for 13 years -guiding her to 5 million album sales, 4 Brit nominations (one award), a Grammy nomination, an Ivor Novello award, Mercury Music prize and many more accolades.
Simon had success with many other artists and was awarded the MMF UK Manager of the Year award in 2006. He moved to New Zealand in January 2015 and now has a label and publishing company in partnership with Universal Music (Australia and NZ), a management company and he also looks after the A&R for Universal’s artist in NZ. Finding some time between the hundreds of daily emails and calls, Simon completed a Masters Degree in Psychotherapy – this has been of immense value when applied to the relationships he has with artists and his ability to understand them.
