INTRODUCING THE ŌTAUTAHI MUSIC ACCESS PROGRAMME (ŌMAP) RDU 98.5FM NFT COLLECTION 2022 - 2023

SALTBOX Studios alongside RDU 98.5FM and Tyanhaus, with the support of the Christchurch City Council, is subsidising access for Ōtautahi musicians to create and promote new work. The programme subsidizes and allows access for 20 artists or bands to produce unreleased pieces of music.

With the programme in full swing, we are excited to announce the release of our ŌMAP NFT Collection on the Non-fungible token marketplace, OpenSea, starting with music from our June and July recipients. Continuing with 2 new artists' work being minted and added to the collection each month until May 2023.

A relatively new concept in the Web3 space, these music NFTs will be able to provide extra support for artists, where their tracks will be able to be sold and allow for artist funding directly from fans or collectors. As an alternative route to the current trend of digital streaming platforms, we are offering the artists some extra value in the music industry.

“The team at RDU are an adventurous and passionate bunch. We walk the earth viewing life through emergent lenses. So the notion of a secondary or third market for Musicians to realise value from their creative work, was worth exploring. Safe to say, blockchain and cryptocurrencies are here to stay. So RDU is not afraid to get our feet wet in order to support NZ musicians. Heard it here first.” - James Meharry, RDU Station Director

The Ōtautahi Music Access Programme RDU 98.5FM NFT Collection was created in partnership with Tyanhaus. An organisation created with the aim of showcasing and supporting Christchurch’s music and art scene both physically and digitally.

Three Boys Brewery presents DarkSpace12

Ōtautahi’s much loved multi-venue mini-fest ‘DarkSpace’ returns to Saint Asaph Street on Saturday 10th September with a stacked line up of South Island musical talent performing across Darkroom, Space Academy and 12 Bar.

Ōtautahi’s much loved multi-venue mini-fest ‘DarkSpace’ returns to Saint Asaph Street on Saturday 10th September with a stacked line up of South Island musical talent performing across Darkroom, Space Academy and 12 Bar.

With thirteen acts to see throughout the evening, ticket holders will be able to move between the three venues from 7pm till late for what could only be described as the ultimate collaboration and celebration of Ōtautahi thriving music community.

The eastern fringe of the city where all three venues are located has become the 03’s hub for independent live music following the Christchurch quakes. The first DarkSpace was held in 2016 and showcased six bands in one night across the two neighbouring venues, Darkroom and Space Academy. During the years to follow, five DarkSpace events were organised between the two venues before 12 Bar’s opening in 2020. The first three-venue event, ‘Zorza’ was presented by RDU 98.5FM in November that year as a united response to the impacts that the Covid-19 pandemic had brought upon the local grassroots music industry. After a couple more lockdowns, DarkSpace finally returns under the apt moniker of DarkSpace12.

“Each venue curated their own line up for DarkSpace12, selecting a few of their favourite acts to invite to be part of the festival. As venues and individuals we all have such different musical tastes, and this helped to curate a line up that covered a range of genres,” Shaw explains. “We wanted a mix of newer and more established acts, some known names and some new discoveries, and a good mix of talent that celebrated diversity in terms of folks who can often unfortunately be under-represented in mainstream music events” says Shaw.

The end result is a line up that will showcase and celebrate emerging local acts who regularly play at the venues such as Saint Peter’s Thursday and Just Another June, as well as including some more established acts, a bunch of familiar faces who have been in the music community for a good while now with the likes of Violet French and The Horrible, and Opawa 45s

Shaw is originally from Ōtepoti and says she is most excited to have her home town favourites Night Lunch on the line up. She’ll also take to the stage with her own band, Bin Day, while 12 Bar Duty Manager Hollan Brabet will be behind the drum kit for Avon Dads.

Rather than being based around one particular headline act that the night builds up to, the festival’s strength is in the line up as a whole. The diverse programming aims to expose attendees to something new that they may have not experienced before and for that unexpected moment to potentially become their DarkSpace12 highlight.

Tickets are available for purchase from Under The Radar

Flagship Professional Development Program Co-Pilot a great success

This week the 2022 Co-Pilot Program - delivered in partnership with Spotify and AAM took place in Sydney. Our Aotearoa participants Diaz Grimm and Gina Linnell, alongside MMF exec committee member Joost Langeveld attended, and described it as ‘a huge opportunity, and massive milestone’

From Joost -

What an absolute honour to represent the MMF Aotearoa and accompany the first ever New Zealand participants in the Co-Pilot22 program - Gina Linnell and Diaz Grimm. Co-Pilot is essentially a mentorship program on steroids - where 'emerging' manager mentees are paired with established manager mentors - all with the incredible support from AAM, Spotify and the MMF! It’s a huge opportunity for them – and a massive milestone moment for the wider Aotearoa music community!!

Ngā mihi to the AAM team. Kate Adams and Maggie Collins' focussed planning, management and execution of the program/event was exemplary.

Massive thanks to Jonathan Harrison and the Spotify staff for opening up the Spotify Sydney office and hosting the formal introduction day event - whilst also organising and facilitating the amazing lineup of guests speakers:  Dr Alethea Beetson (BLAKSOUND, Blak Social, Digi Youth Arts), Leanne DeSouza (Nightlife Music), Sydney Lopes (Spotify, Head of Hip Hop & R&B partnerships).

Much respect and gratitude to all the mentors for the selfless sharing of precious time, experience, and industry knowledge. Intergenerational knowledge transfer in practice, yes!

Artist management is a crazy ride and often comes without predefined job descriptions and operates in relative isolation, without much external guidance !

This is what makes the co-pilot program such an amazing opportunity. A chance to learn from the best, to glean context and concepts from industry professionals and build networks that will aid careers moving forward.

Co-Pilot is a super exciting initiative which will undoubtedly help shape collective ‘music industry’ futures in(between) Australia,  Aotearoa and beyond. Long may it last.
