Ōtautahi six-piece 1 Drop Nation have dropped their exciting self-titled debut album, and it’s guaranteed to set Aotearoa music fans up for a great summer!

From start to finish, this epic 11-track debut will transport you and take you on an awesome journey. Starting with a moving, rumbling intro ‘Waerea’, which calls on ancestors and clears the path as anticipation is built through the sound of a beating heart and being asked if we’re ‘ready’ - before kicking into gear with hit after hit of homegrown roots, funk, reggae and conscious feel-good vibes.

“We’re so proud of all the mahi that has gone into making this album,” says lead singer Kanei Johnson. “We are so honoured to have such an amazing engineer in Dr Lee Prebble at Surgery Studios and our man Josh Llewellyn at Downbeat Mastering is an absolute legend.”

Even though the album was recorded over the course of a year, this project has been 10 years in the making. Over that time, they’ve been making fans and building excitement through playing festivals, completing a national tour, supporting some of Aotearoa’s finest acts and, most recently, releasing hit singles ‘Runaway’, ‘The Children’ and ‘Groove Show’.

“Finally having a body of work to share with our whānau, friends and the world has us puuumped. It’s our wives/partners/tamariki and whānau who all support us on this journey - they’re the heartbeat that keeps us going and we appreciate them all so much.”

Band Members include Marc (drums), Dru (bass, backing vocals), Derin (keyboards, backing vocals / Nga Tai Ki Torere), Paerau (guitar / Ngāi Tahu, Te Arawa, Ngā Puhi), Burke (guitar / Ngā Puhi, Te Ātiawa) and Kanei (lead vocals / Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Kahungunu).

Now that this long-awaited debut album is in the world, the group are ready to perform it live at shows and festivals like this year's ZM Electric Avenue. They’ve even started working on album number 2 - with the studio booked for early 2023 - so tune in and stay tuned to 1 Drop Nation.

Following the release of the era-defining ‘Games’, Jackson Boswell’s next offering solidifies the artist has found his sound, and showcases a more vulnerable side.

‘Psycho’ is a relatable, captivating track that follows the narrative of an inner conversation with one self and the depth of thoughts that can drive you crazy.

“The song is written as an inner conversation to myself, reflecting on how you can feel like you’re the crazy one and going psycho when the situation is not at all your fault or your responsibility,” Boswell explains. “Anxiety is a really common feeling and I think the song captures that, but can also be interpreted in different ways."

Once again working with good friend and producer Christian Tjandrawinata, the pair's talents continue to compliment each other, and resulted in what is a stunning and meticulously curated track.

With more to come from Jackson Boswell next year, the artist exclaims “I’m super excited for this release and to keep sharing these new songs with people as my sound develops in a way that makes me very excited.”

‘Psycho’ is out Friday, 25th November on all streaming platforms. Plus, see Jackson Boswell live at Festival One in January 2023.

‘You Don’t Get It’ is an ode to the turbulent 2021; inspired by the state of the nation after numerous lockdowns and being overloaded with varying information in the media. Written and produced with Joe Faris, the pair explored the narrative of breaking free from other’s expectations, and finding peace amidst the noise of opinions.

The music video exudes the tracks tone with Avya navigating her way through a crowded household, and finding solace in the audience. Following the release of ‘Tired,’ ZËxÏÏ has one more offering for 2022, with new track ‘blamed it on me (demo).’

Following the release of ‘Tired,’ ZËxÏÏ has one more offering for 2022, with new track ‘blamed it on me (demo).’

Created from a narrative of late-night thoughts, and with the meticulous decision to keep the track’s original demo recordings, the artist’s intentions are to take his listeners on a path of reflection, in what’s his most raw and honest release to date.

“To me, ‘blamed it on me’ is my attempt of conveying the subject of “accountability” in a palatable format,” ZËxÏÏ explains, “It’s an audit of hypocrisy for those who inherently love to blame everyone but themselves, and an introspection for those who never self-reflect on the hurt they impose on others. But for most, I hope it simply provides closure.”

The track is self written, performed and produced, showcasing the amassed talent and individuality ZËxÏÏ holds. A different tone from his more recent releases, the track adds a more rhythmic feel to his eclectic catalogue of music, and rounds out on what has been an exciting year of music from the artist. Currently writing new material, stay tuned for bigger projects from ZËxÏÏ for 2023.

‘blamed it on me (demo)’ is out Friday, 25th November on all streaming platforms.

Alt-pop artist Michèle Ducray releases dark-pop single ‘The Night’ feat. LA rapper Kevin Posey

Auckland-based rising dark-pop star Michèle Ducray has revealed her new single ‘The Night’.

LISTEN HERE

Auckland-based rising dark-pop star Michèle Ducray has revealed her new single ‘The Night’.

A melancholic, mysterious and reflective dark-pop song, ‘The Night’ is about turning toward an expansive experience when you’re having your lowest point. “You may be falling down a rabbit hole of depression, but you can always rely on escaping these moments by looking deep within yourself and seeking answers you already know are there,” says Michèle.

Recorded, mixed and mastered by Sydney-based producer Liam Quinn , the song came to Michèle while driving down a highway looking into the vast night sky. “It captured me how strangely alluring it was. Dotted with iridescent stars. I started singing the verse melody, and then the chorus. Liam and I weren't really vibing the original bridge, so that’s when I suggested contacting Los Angeles rapper Kevin Posey, who came up with the amazing rap that’s part of the bridge.” Following on from singles ‘Midnight’ (2021) and ‘Manifesto’ (2022), ‘The Night’ is still in keeping with Michèle’s penchant for creating spellbinding, dark and edgy pop that takes its inspiration from fantasy intertwined with the mystical. “I based a lot of the feeling of the song on "In the Dark of the Night" by Rasputin from the movie Anastasia and I love telling stories and enticing people to really think about the lyricism behind it. All my songs have meaning and I love conveying that through my lyrics, effects and production.”

Raised in South Africa and China, Michèle discovered her affinity for music when she was just a child. Now based in Auckland, over the course of her young music career she’s worked with some of the biggest names in the business, is touted as ‘one to watch’ and will be performing live at Bay Dreams and ZM’s Electric Avenue 2023. She also has an EP in the works - so make sure you don’t miss a beat by following Michèle Ducray!

It makes for an impressive debut, showcasing the breadth and depth of Macaulay’s talents, not only as a songwriter and vocalist, but also as a producer.

“The album and the journey of making it has been about the evolution of self. It's about transforming energy in the moment into something tangible, such as song, poem, music, art,” explains Macaulay.

It also serves as a reminder of the past few years, in which the world has faced unprecedented times.

“It represents a collective experience, with the pandemic being at the forefront of my mind, but deeper than that, a snapshot of time and space. Rising NZ singer and songwriter Jessica Leigh releases epic new summer anthem, ‘my way’

Super talented, Wellington-based singer and songwriter Jessica Leigh has today dropped a soaring summer anthem, ‘my way’.

Super talented, Wellington-based singer and songwriter Jessica Leigh has today dropped a soaring summer anthem, ‘my way’.

Sonically, ‘my way’ is a bold and epic track with big vibrant synths and an upbeat tempo - the perfect soundtrack for a festival roadie. But scratch beneath the surface and you’ll uncover a song with lyrical depth and empowerment that’s sure to resonate with many.

’my way’ stemmed from having the worst mental health year of my life, where everything felt incredibly difficult and it seemed like the world was against me,” explains Jessica.

“The first half of the song ruminates on being in this incredibly bad headspace and just wanting something to go right in life, before switching it up in the bridge and deciding to make things go right for yourself. It’s about falling back in love with who you are and the things that make you happy, ultimately depicting a grand self-reclamation.

The song was recorded, mixed, and mastered by UK producer and engineer Jules Evans, who has worked with legends such as Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood. It’s accompanied by a lyric video, which is premiering now on TheBestPop. Watch here.

my way’ follows the release of Jessica’s hugely successful 2021 single SUMMER ROYALTY from her EP summerland. It also makes way for a string of more singles to follow.

“The upbeat, warm, synth heavy pop sound of ‘my way’ is a good indication of what people can expect from my music in the future,” says Jessica, whose catalogue to date showcases an artist who has grown up with an adoration of art, music, and poetry. Born in Nelson, but now based in Wellington, Jessica began writing and producing music at the age of 11, finding her home in pop music – often championing a chorus of 80s inspired synths, warm guitars and anthemic drums.

Jessica’s songs are inspired by the technicolor, emotional spectrum of youth and the storytelling within them often depicts vibrant, visceral coming-of-age narratives, reflecting on themes such as young love, friendship, growing pains and everything in between.

Jessica won a regional songwriting competition in 2019 and officially began releasing music shortly after. She released her debut EP 17 in 2020 and followed it up with a sophomore EP summerland in 2021.
