Paris inspires young singer-songwriter IMANI-J's new single

See Thru Time is the second solo single from rising star Imani-J, a young singer/songwriter from Whakatū/Nelson.  See Thru Time has a pop and electronica vibe and was inspired by Imani-J’s recent visit to see family in France.

See Thru Time is the second solo single from rising star Imani-J, a young singer/songwriter from Whakatū/Nelson. Produced and co-written by multi-award winning artist Tali, and mixed by Tom Lee from acclaimed drum and bass duo Lee Mvtthews, See Thru Time has a pop and electronica vibe and was inspired by Imani-J’s recent visit to see family in France.

With a delicate opening of ghostly keys, stuttering pads and subtle beats we follow Imani-J as she walks alone in the winter’s early morning light, taking in historical buildings, market stalls and the first rush of Parisians off to work.

“I wrote See Thru Time after visiting Paris for the first time in 12 years – the last time I was there I was three years old! Even though I am part French, as well as Haitian and a New Zealander, I felt very much like a tourist in France,” Imani-J says. “See Thru Time was inspired by my experience of Paris as a teenager, and reflects on how different my next visit to the city might be, when I’m a young adult. The song is very personal because it is drawn from my real life experiences and the stage in my life I am currently in, which is discovering who I am and thinking about who I will grow up to be."

2023 was a productive year for Imani-J. She was a 2x national finalist with Play It Strange, in the Youthtown song writing contest with her waiata reo Te Mana, and for the Peace Song competition with her song Peace Inside Your Arms. JOLA BURNS, the pop-electronica duo she formed with her cousin Kahu Sanson-Burnett released their four debut singles Going Up Now, Looking Back at Me, Sixes and Sevens and Arcadia, and performed in front of thousands of people at Nelson’s Opera in the Park. JOLA BURNS has been featured on RNZ’s Music 101 Introducing segment. As a solo artist, Imani-J opened for Hollie Smith in Picton as part of Hollie’s nationwide The Bones tour.

2024 is shaping up to be equally busy, with Imani-J releasing her first independent single North Star in February this year. North Star has already garnered listeners in over 50 countries via Spotify. She has been appointed an ambassador for Play It Strange, a charity that supports young New Zealand songwriters to write, record and perform their own songs. She’ll be further honing her song writing skills as one of only nine young musicians selected for the first week-long songwriting camp run by Big Fan, run by producer and songwriter Joel Little and his wife Gemma.

“It is amazing to have the support from others in the music industry – I’m so grateful for all the opportunities. Working with Tali as a mentor and co-writer on See Thru Time has been absolutely incredible. I’ve learnt so much and I feel so motivated and supported. It is exactly what I need to take me to the next level.”

See Thru Time is released on 10 May 2024 to coincide with New Zealand Music Month. The pre-save link to See Thru Time is available here:

ECLECTIC INDIE-FOLK-ROCKERS theSLACKS UNVEIL NEW ALBUM INFORMATION APE

Hailing from the heartland of Taranaki, quirky genre-spanning four-piece band theSLACKS offer up their latest full-length studio album, the 11-song-long INFORMATION APE.

Hailing from the heartland of Taranaki, quirky genre-spanning four-piece band theSLACKS offer up their latest full-length studio album, the 11-song-long INFORMATION APE.

The line-up of brothers Scott Armstrong (vocals, rhythm guitar) and Mark Armstrong (vocals, lead guitar) and good friends Blake ‘Boogie Woogie’ Gibson (vocals, bass guitar), and Zane ‘the Zaniac’ Greig (vocals, drums) joyfully produce a varied blend of music spanning a broad-range of influences inspired and informed by the sounds of the turbulent ‘60’s and beyond, positioning theSLACKS all over the indie-rock folk-pop spectrum.

Lyrically robust, theSLACKS songs are musical throwbacks; vignettes dressed as pub-rock, fizz-pop and country-ska.  Shades of Neil Young and The Kinks haunt theSLACKS song-writing, brought partially into the light perhaps, by a ghost of Billy Joel.

The eclectic fun-loving band’s third studio album INFORMATION APE is a firm play on the term Information Age, with the title of the album and lead single directly referring to our human experience living immersed in a technology-drenched habitat. Is it slackness or circumstance that has meant a four year delay in these boys dropping their first album in nine years? Probably both. Ironically or maybe coincidentally, but definitely typically, the album was delayed by the biggest information dump in history, making it absolutely of its time on a level beyond just words and music.

Since first forming in 1999, the band have earned a reputation for creating catchy lyrics, easy melodies and sweet vocal harmonies, holding a light to times passed. Their sheer love of making music is evident in their delivery of pure, unpretentious, fun rock n’ roll and their effortless crossing over genres to encapsulate everything in between.

Recorded, mixed, and co-produced with the band by talented engineer Sam Johnson at Rhythm Ace in Ōakura, four singles have been released off the new album – fun, nostalgic musical throw-back Crystal Mountain High followed hot on the heels of the sweet and charming previous single and video ‘Love To Go’. Prior to that, the social commentary of title track ‘Information Ape’ was unveiled, with the stellar musical and lyrical Neil Young tribute ‘Old King Young’ first out the gate.

Says Scotty: “Each song on the album is an observation on life as an ‘information ape’, which is not necessarily meant in a derogatory way, more in a ‘still green and learning’ kind of way where a  high-level production aesthetic often glosses over the validity of the message. It’s a bit part of what we’re being fed via our phones and why people struggle to discern the plausible from the implausible.

Available on vinyl and via the best digital outlets in cyberspace, this new collection of Slack flavoured tunes is designed to connect with what they describe as “this hopelessly tangled information age.”

Explains the band: “Internet porn, music festivals, artificial intelligence, bar brawls, invasive tech, suicide, friendship, gatherings, addiction, musical heroes and, of course, love and hope populate this album. These songs reflect the full and flustered times in which we live. Sometimes being connected feels more like being hopelessly tangled. As data-dust falls around us all like staticky snow, ask yourself – ‘is it information or is it marketing?’ We’re all being mapped, all of the time. How do you feel about it?”

Very much a self-funded, self-managed and self-aware band, theSLACKS have embarked on numerous national tours, released three full-length studio albums, multiple singles and videos and boast a profile only slightly bigger than a billionaire’s tax return. Unperturbed, theSLACKS continue to operate on the highly sustainable concept of ‘breaking even’.

While some may think it a folly to produce a full studio album in the age of streaming, this has been a band goal since the beginning, and while delays have been frustrating, the band are incredibly satisfied to finally bring it all home at long last.

Best known for antipodean bilingual pop hits ‘Yeah Nah’ and the viral sensation ‘Big Aroha’, theSLACKS excel at writing highly relatable and quintessentially Kiwi lyrics, often visually framed in typically Aotearoa/New Zealand scenarios of coastal roads, the local dairy, the classic fish & chip shop, and most importantly, the local community. Through this shared connection theSLACKS continue to create a poignant social commentary fuelled by a selfless desire to entertain, spread aroha, and their good vibes.

Says Scotty: “Our reasons are fearlessly selfish. As ‘guardians of the rolling vibe’, we love the fun and freedom of rolling around the country playing music, we love a live audience – a wild band and a willing audience is the most immediate and visceral interaction between people you can experience. That’s what keeps us going.”

Ultimately theSLACKS are four good friends who share a few common drivers: a love for rock ‘n’ roll and the wide umbrella of its rebellious arms, a love of word-play, a love of horse-play, and the sheer joy of writing, recording, and performing good music with good people. Join them in celebrating the release of Information Ape as they host four high energy-emitting live dates over the Music Month of May as per below:

Manila-born, Tāmaki Makaurau-based artist Ms. Mia delivers an alluring “glam with sass” music video for her punchy new single “Going For The Kill”.

Directed by Flora Driessen, the vintage aesthetic in the music video cleverly reimagines the vintage archetypes of the “housewife” and stereotypical female characters, deftly shifting them to portray the fierce, empowered essence of modern women – or as Ms. Mia affectionately refers to them - DFWM Queens!

This juxtaposition of vintage imagery and the song's bold lyrics, alongside Ms. Mia’s commanding portrayal weaves a compelling narrative that challenges conventional gender roles, asserting Ms. Mia's empowerment and agency in her own story.

Going For The Kill’ is the second single and music video released from Ms. Mia’s upcoming EP LIVING IN THE SHADOWS – set for release on 7th June 2024

Ōtautahi-based rising contemporary folk singer and songwriter Keren Mara has today released her vulnerable new single ‘Under the wind’.

Today’s stunning release is telling of Keren Mara’s knack for raw and emotive storytelling - as she shares her journey of overcoming trauma to help others do the same. "This song acts as a mantra of knowing your inner strength,” says Keren. “It’s about finding peace in the darkness, and also knowing it's ok to feel and express emotions.”

Made with the support of NZ On Air, this reflective new single was recorded at Keren’s home studio, alongside co-producer Harry Finlayson-Hood. It was then mixed and mastered by Jackson Levi.

‘Under the wind’ combines Keren’s gentle and emotive vocals, with the folk-driven instrumentation of harmonicas, tambourine, acoustic and slide guitars. Keren says ‘Under the wind’ is part of a collection of music she’s currently working on, all written during a five-year period in which the artist overcame immense trauma.

Having released a range of singles since 2020, Keren has cultivated an undeniably warm sound that is sure to bring comfort to any listener, especially those experiencing hardship. “For anyone who's been through trauma and heartbreak - you are stronger than you think,” says Keren. “You deserve to be happy and enjoy the good times as they come.”

A peaceful accompaniment to the track is the beautiful, soon-to-be-released ‘Under the wind’ music video. Filmed with Neato Productions at Te Onepoto/Taylors Mistake in Ōtautahi, Keren says that she, “wanted to include the stunning views of Taylors Mistake because being out in nature is very healing and soothes my soul. Set to be released over the coming weeks, be sure to press play on this stunning track now and stay tuned for more from this exciting up and coming talent!

About Keren Mara

Growing up as a ‘Third Culture Kid’ in a sheltered Christian environment across Asia, Keren spent much of her childhood in Thailand and moved around a lot. This upbringing led Keren to delve deep within herself and take comfort from artists such as Leanne Rhymes, Mariah Carey and Faith Hill. Alongside these artists, she was primarily exposed to Christian folk/pop music. It wasn't until Keren was older, and having lived through some unimaginable loss, that she went back to her first love, music. She began her music career by getting her degree at Ara Institute of Canterbury (2021), and hasn't stopped since. Keren has been gigging around Christchurch with her duo partner and co-producer, Harry Finlayson-Hood, and in 2023 joined the gypsy fair for 4 months as a musician and stage manager. Keren Mara’s narrative-driven songwriting and ethereal vocals paint a stunning image of her uplifting resilience - with her latest single ‘Under the wind’ set to make waves across Aotearoa!
