BLUE RIVER BABY BAND 'BLUE RIVER BABY'

Hot off the success of their first two charting singles ‘Blackyard Town’ & ‘Walk of Shame’, Blue River Baby Band (BRBB) are proud to release their 3rd single ‘Blue River Baby’, off their forthcoming debut album and just in time to celebrate NZ Music Month

The 3rd single from New Zealand Band ‘Blue River Baby Band’ (BRBB) ‘Blue River Baby’ will make its debut on the 24th of May 2019. This tune resonates with BRBB’s environmental conscience, recalling childhood memories of when our rivers once ran clean and clear. It speaks to the edges where urban environments rub against mother nature.

BRBB want us wake up and to make positive choices towards sustainability as well as enjoying a rocking tune!  Amazing ‘Dianna Ross’ like vocalist and performer Ivy Padilla, stands up & clearly shows her depth, talent & exceptional vocal range, with this new track further illustrating the strengths of the band, it’s clear why they are so loved live!

The song was the opening tune, during their magical live show, performing to more than 20000 people, as the band headlined the Nelson New Year’s Eve concert.  They’ve also produced a music video with award winning Wellington photographer and artist Bruce Mortimer, filmed on locations across New Zealand.

The Band who came together in 2016 in Wellington, were drawn together for their combined love of making music to move and connect people. The result that has captivated audiences at their shows, is a powerful infusion of vintage rock with elements of funk dub, soul, ska and reggae.

With an organic, rocking sound that has been storming stages over the past few years. Blue River Baby Band pull together an epic group of groove monsters and deliver a unique, addictive sound with brilliant results. BRBB are Ivy Padilla (Panda) Lead vocals, Cam Crawford Keys and vocals, Jason Hotton Drums, Dave Bamford Bass, Matt Fitzpatrick Guitar, John Gaulter Sax and woodwind.

The Single is releasing under their independent Wellington Label, Fire Flower Records. It was engineered & recorded live & mixed by Dr Lee Prebble at his Surgery Studios in Newtown Wellington with mastering from Mike Gibson of Munki studio.  The name Blue River Baby Band is a lament, referring to a time when our rivers ran clear and clean.

LOVE YOUR LOCAL VENUE DAY

The theme for NZ Music Month this year is Discover Live. Live music venues are a vital part of the local scene so on the last day of NZ Music Month 2019 we’d love to celebrate their contribution. Venues are where artists develop their craft, road test their songs and connect with others – the audiences they play to, and bands they play with – to build their musical communities.

The last Friday of May is Love Your Local Venue Day. We want to see people all over New Zealand getting out and seeing shows all month and all year – but especially on Friday 31 May.

Throughout NZ Music Month we have been taking the opportunity to highlight these champions of live music by featuring a NZ Music Venue of the Day on our social media channels and website.  This has included out of the way spots like the Barrytown Hall, which is a favourite of touring musicians since the local community really get behind any shows that are held there. Also the Wine Cellar in Auckland, which started as a hole-in-the-wall with acoustic acts only, but eventually developed its own dedicated performance space and is now celebrating its fifteen year anniversary! Venues from Invercargill to Whangarei have featured so far, with another ten to come. View the full list on our website.

NZ music history website - AudioCulture - has also been running a great series on the live music champions of yester-year - The Facts of Live. They’ve unearthed some great stories, whether it is the ‘special coffees’ served by 50s coffee lounge Monde Marie (to get around the liquor laws) or Napier venue The Cabana which had a special performance in 1984 by members of Hello Sailor and DD Smash when the woman who ran it, Charlie Morrison, finally retired after decades of service.

There are a huge amount of stories and great photos that go with these venues, so we hope some of these will come out on the day and music lovers across the country take time to appreciate the great work that venues do in keeping our local music scene alive and vibrant.

NZ Music Month’s Rodney Fisher said “This NZ Music Month we want to talk about the places that provide the spaces for artists to perform and audiences to enjoy New Zealand music.  Playing live is an incredibly important part of building and sustaining a career as a musician, so we want to shine a spotlight on the venues that support our New Zealand artists all year round, and give us a place to come together and experience music from Aotearoa.”

MOANA AND THE TRIBE 'TU'

Tū' is the first song to be released from Moana’s sixth album ONO, produced by Paddy Free. Currently, Moana and Paddy are touring the 'My Name is Moana' project through Arts on Tour with band members Cadzow Cossar and Trina Maniapoto around NZ, using song and story to explore the relationship New Zealanders have with Ocean and people power.

Tū' is the first song to be released from Moana’s sixth album ONO, produced by Paddy Free.

Currently, Moana and Paddy are touring the 'My Name is Moana' project through Arts on Tour with band members Cadzow Cossar and Trina Maniapotoaround NZ, using song and story to explore the relationship New Zealanders have with Ocean and people power.

While 'Tū', the new drum n bass collaboration between Moana Maniapoto, Paddy Free and Scotty Morrison is mainly in te reo Māori, it also features vocalist Jani Lauzon (Canada). A multi-disciplinary artist and Juno nominated singer-songwriter, Jani’s vocals reflect her Metis heritage.

“Jani is an extraordinary singer. The only direction I gave was to sing in her language and to meditate on the theme of tohi,” says Moana. “She nailed it.”

'Tū' is a karakia or incantation performed as part of a ritual ceremony of tohi during which a child is immersed in water or sprinkled with water from a branch dipped in the stream or lake. 'Tū' is a dedication to the God of War to strengthen and empower the child.

“My son was baptised in the little church at our marae. My daughter had traditional tohi rites performed over her by a tribal elder on the shores of Lake Taupō. Tohi makes sense because it connects the child and whānau to our ancestors and the environment.”

Moana’s first album TAHI was recently acknowledged by Independent Recorded Music NZ’s Taite Music Prize as a NZ Classic, twenty-five years after its release.
