AGE PRYOR 'INVISIBLE LINES'
Tāmaki-based musician Age Pryor has today released Invisible Lines, a stunning collection of original songs composed and produced over the past two years.
Tāmaki-based musician Age Pryor has today released Invisible Lines, a stunning collection of original songs composed and produced over the past two years.
The multi-layered record is articulate, visceral and deeply thought-provoking - taking the listener on a sonic journey that speaks to the human experience.
For Age, Invisible Lines represents an intersection of songwriting craft, live performance and electronic production, something he’s been “enjoying exploring”.
“A lot of time has passed since I released work under my own name, so there’s some relief mixed in there. It feels like drawing a new mark in the sand from which I can jump in new directions,” he says of the record.
”I’m excited to be releasing new solo work, and always enjoy the contrast between working on my own and the collaborative process of bigger groups.”
The significance of the invisible connections that exist between people and places can be seen in Sam O’Leary’s spellbinding album artwork (pictured below). O’Leary – a Kiwi designer based in Portland, Oregon – put those subtleties to paper, with the artwork embodying everything Invisible Lines is – an album that uses nuanced songwriting, crisp production and rich sounds to tell stories that every person can hear a piece of themselves in.
The record also forms an invisible line with his 2003 debut solo album, City Chorus, for the similarities in process and having the space to do what really, truly felt right.
”The process of making those two albums has been similar – allowing myself the time to carve out musical spaces that feel good, following threads, making discoveries that might not have come if I’d been in a hurry,” Age says.
The release of Invisible Lines is also accompanied by the album’s third single, ‘Jump Rope’.
Put simply, ‘Jump Rope’ is a song about wanting to break out, or even break everything down, in order to start anew.
Penned during Aotearoa’s first Covid-19 lockdown, the pacy and impatient track has a sense of urgency about it, something that Age says was influenced both by the desire many had to “get out and be free again”, and the energy and anger of the global Black Lives Matter protests that were happening alongside the lockdown. It’s a track that inspires you to create something better – whatever that something may be.
The song features live drums performed by Chris O’Connor, was mixed by Neil Baldock and was mastered by Chris Chetland.
In the years between City Chorus and Invisible Lines Age has spent time as key player in a number of much-loved collaborative music projects (Fly My Pretties, Congress of Animals and The Woolshed Sessions, among others), composed for film and television, toured the world as musical director and executive producer of The Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra and helped develop the next generation of contemporary musicians at Auckland tertiary institute Unitec.

‘Vows’ is the band’s way of paying tribute to the style of UB40 that has heavily influenced them from the band’s inception.
Rotating between the three lead vocalists, ‘Vows’ brings in Palmerston North-based Snow Chase, who also performed on ‘Just A Little Bit’ released in February.

TE KAAHU reveals beautiful new waiata aroha
Acclaimed singer and songwriter Em Walker (Waikato-Tainui, Ngaati Tiipaa) has today revealed a new TE KAAHU waiata - the exquisite ‘E Hine Ē’.
Acclaimed singer and songwriter Em Walker (Waikato-Tainui, Ngaati Tiipaa) has today revealed a new TE KAAHU waiata - the exquisite ‘E Hine Ē’.
Walker - who is best known as her alt-pop alter ego Theia - established the reo Māori project TE KAAHU during lockdown in 2020; releasing ‘E Taku Huia Kaimanawa’. Now she follows it up with ‘E Hine Ē’.
Written and produced by Walker herself, ‘E Hine Ē’ is a devastatingly beautiful ballad with angelic choir-like vocals and soaring melodies; held by the warm and nostalgic familiarity of a ‘Māori strum’ and poetic lyrics in te reo Māori.
“This is a waiata aroha. It is for any girl or woman you have loved or ever will love,” says the Ōtautahi-born artist.
In keeping with the powerful simplicity of ‘E Hine Ē’, is a video shot by well-known Auckland-based fashion photographer and videographer, Frances Carter. The video holds the gaze of Walker, who’s adorned by a hei matau pounamu (symbol of abundance, determination, strength) and holds the matakiirea kaahu - a manu rangatira (esteemed bird of high status), which is representative of the project’s namesake and a personal kaitiaki (guardian).
Walker, who is fluent in te reo Māori and holds a BA double majoring in Māori Indigenous studies and Te Reo Rangatira from University of Canterbury, is a fierce proponent for the revitalisation of reo Māori and recently featured in an article in Rolling Stone Australia discussing this.
‘E Hine Ē’ and ‘E Taku Huia Kaimanawa’ are the first singles from the debut TE KAAHU album, which Walker is currently working on alongside new Theia music. The next single ‘Rangirara’ is set for release in late August.
Although TE KAAHU is seemingly a world away from the high-energy sound of Theia, there is an unmistakable strength and mana that runs through Walker’s work in both reo Māori and English. Walker is at the forefront of a new generation of young creatives in Aotearoa who are determined to smash through the glass ceiling.

With the help of the New Zealand Music Commission, SOLE Music Academy has put together a brand new music business seminar and mentoring series to support emerging Canterbury artists and upcoming music professionals. THE ARTIST is the first of 6 live music seminars, held on Monday 16th August at SOLE Music Academy Studio in Addington, Christchurch.
The series was curated by Sacha Vee, founder of SOLE Music Academy, to cover important aspects fundamental to developing a career in the music industry and to counteract the disconnect between the North and South island music industry. Each 2hr event has one specific topic and three of the country's leading music industry professionals such as, Mikee Tucker (L.A.B., LOOP), Lorraine Barry (Dave Dobbyn, Aaradhna), Jeff Newton (NZ On Air), Cushla Aston (Louis Baker, Julia Deans) and Devin Abrams (Shapeshifter, Pacific Heights) who will cover everything you need to know about how to make and release your music successfully.
An important facet of the series was that our local talent could have a chance to meet face to face to form ongoing relationships with the industry professionals and other attendees to build their music network and community. To encourage this, there will be a Q&A with the speakers and the opportunity to network with other attendees & speakers. Attendees will also have the rare opportunity to book in a 1:1 private mentoring session to delve further into their own music goals and plans to establish or develop their own music business.
In the first live seminar THE ARTIST, attendees will hear from one of New Zealand’s top artist managers and artist development lecturer, Cushla Aston (Louis Baker & Julia Deans); Sacha Vee multi-platinum award winning artist and founder of SOLE Music Academy that was created to help support new emerging artists start their own music careers, and the Award-winning ‘First Lady of Drum & Bass’’ MC Tali whose extensive trailblazing career in music includes a top UK hit single.
