RDU 98.5FM celebrates 45 years - 1976 to 2021 Announcing new facility SALTBOX Studios to help foster Ōtautahi Musicians

RDU 98.5FM has been the leading music broadcaster in Ōtautahi since 1976. Championing our local and regional musicians by promoting their music, gigs, tours...and personalities. Traditionally only offering playlist outcomes for musicians, RDU plans to continue building capacity in its 45th year by embarking on a journey to open recording and production facilities only a stones throw from the station door.
Last year, The University of Canterbury executed a national survey through the Student Radio Network, to identify areas where our nation's musicians needed support. They included, building community, facilitating higher quality production values and education in improving capability.
And so for RDU, a purpose built facility connected to a broadcast platform was not only a logical step forward, but a necessity in this uncertain climate. RDU 98.5FM director James Meharry had a clear purpose in mind:
“Our motivations to build this facility and programme are driven by the needs we see around us every day. We must develop the capability of RDU beyond broadcasting. We know this is the right decision and the time has come to make our move.”
SALTBOX Studios will provide educational programmes, rehearsal spaces, a recording studio and spaces for creatives to connect and collaborate. RDU is set to launch a BOOSTED campaign in October and will be making lava hot noise to bring in support. All support will be channelled into making the studio fit-for-purpose.
THE BOOSTED CAMPAIGN: RDU 98.5FM is seeking support for our Boosted campaign. This is to set-up and fitout SALTBOX Studios. The Campaign will be running October 21st - November 18th. If you can help this campaign in any way, please make contact on the details provided below or head straight to the boosted project site and donate today!

MASAYA 'RIDE WIT US'

Raglan-based Masaya band is about to release a brand new single ‘Ride wit Us’.
As with many of their tracks this is about getting onboard the band's vibe at live gigs.
It's a call to arms. “Ride wit Us is a song that pulls anyone and everyone out of their comfort zones to let loose for one big boogie,” says lead vocalist for Masaya, Reiki Ruawai.
“Sometimes when we’re playing shows we see people wanting to engage but they may be a little afraid to cut loose”, says drummer and co-writer for Masaya, Kaea Ruawai.
She adds that her brother and she wanted to write a song, “ that draws people out of the fringes and gets them in the pit”.
The track was recorded and mixed in Raglan at CSR Studios. It was then mastered at Metropolis Studios in London by Engineer Tony Cousins (Adele, Seal, The Verve, Massive Attack…)
The band believes that genres are not that important and can be restricting for artists.
With a straight up the guts kick and smack track Ride wit Us has jinga jick gat, rocky riffs, funky synth & organ bubble grooves with stomping four on the floor boots adding to their unique style quintessentially influenced from their Hometown in Raglan, NZ
Masaya are starting to flex and have a solid summer ahead of them. They have been announced to play Homegrown, Sundown Festival, Tora Bombora and Outfields Festival this summer with more shows yet to be announced.
Masaya was formed in 2019 when lead singer Reiki Ruawai needed to put together a band for a university assignment. He coaxed his sister, Kaea, to jump on the drums and friend Muroki to play bass. Performing as a three-piece for a short time before they were joined by Jules Blewman (TOI) on lead guitar and Joe Kaptein on keys. As a five-piece, they recorded their 2019 EP, TONGUE & GROOVE and have been playing successful live shows and festivals ever since. Check out Masaya Band below.

Today, Berlin-based Kiwi singer-songwriter Graham Candy releases his new EP Keep On Smiling, a feel-good collection of infectious dance-pop that oozes summer vibes.
From the nostalgic warmth of 'Aroha' that sings about memories of sun-dappled Kauri trees and juicy feijoas, to the über-catchy title track's timely reminder of better, brighter days to come. These sing-along tunes are barbeque/road trip/dance-floor ready, complete with Candy's flair for quirky lyricism and glittery 90's-style production.
Candy reflects on the journey: "Keep On Smiling is my second ever EP and I've done a lot of soul-searching to get to this point. I finally feel like my music is 150 percent me. It's especially poignant to be sharing all my energy and love that I put into this record with my listeners, friends, and whānau in New Zealand going through a really tough time at the moment. I'm looking forward to playing these songs one day for them and have a big party!"
Graham Candy is a singer songwriter of upbeat dance pop music who moved from Auckland to Berlin in 2013. Candy had his first collaboration with famed German DJ and producer Alle Farben, ‘She Moves’ (2014) that gained him quick popularity with his high-range vocals, as well as his first platinum single.
Since the move, Candy has performed at Glastonbury, Lollapalooza, numerous European festivals and twice (2016,2020) at one of Europe’s biggest street parties; The New Years Eve Party at Brandenburg Gate in Berlin to a live crowd of 1 million and televised crowd of 8 million!

SUBSTAX 'RED BALLOON'
Happiness is a red balloon. Tāmaki Makaurau alternative dance act Substax release Red Balloon, their second single for 2021, through DRM NZ today
Happiness is a red balloon. Tāmaki Makaurau alternative dance act Substax release Red Balloon, their second single for 2021, through DRM NZ today 22 October 2021
A song for the times, this is a dance music duet featuring both Claudia and Nick on vocals. It is somewhat of a meditation on the meaning of happiness, expressing nostalgia for summers gone by, and musings on the complexities of love.
The sound is crunchy, curving and kinetic, and the release is twinned with an inspired remix by Auckland producer Roger Atmore aka truthdk.
Atmore recorded new live parts (guitar, bass, percussion and fruity backing vocals), complimented by some studio wizardry; harmonic and textured effects.
The end result is something like a deep house fusion of The Stones Roses and Tame Impala.
This release is accompanied by an immersive video cut on Youtube, produced by Substax’s Claudia Gunn.
DJ’s can request a copy of the radio edit which is showcased in the band's Youtube video here:
