Old Salts RELEASE: ‘Stories Told by the Sea’

If the sea could speak it would have many stories to tell. Old Salts’ latest release ‘Stories Told by the Sea’ is a moody ballad that takes you on a journey through a spiritual realm.

If the sea could speak it would have many stories to tell. Old Salts’ latest release ‘Stories Told by the Sea’ is a moody ballad that takes you on a journey through a spiritual realm.

This mysterious melody brings you to the seashore at sunset while the bonfire comes alight, and as the guitar solo sets in, you’ll feel like you’ll never want to leave this realm.

Put simply “It’s something to sit down and listen to after a hard day at work while having a beer.” Toby Hayes

'Stories told by the Sea' will be the third of four songs to be released off their forthcoming EP also called ‘Stories told by the Sea’ due out 2022.

Each song brings its own vibe to the EP while still falling within the parameters of alt rock. From serious to satire, moody rock ballads to angsty rock anthems – it's a four-flavour taster pack which will pack a punch.

So far released is the angst filled anti-protest protest rock anthem Itchy Feet released last month and their debut release  'Take a Breather'  described by Ben Ruegg from Muzicnet as

“Citing influences such as Primus and Them Crooked Vultures, you can definitely hear this in the way the song, not only sounds but how it is written and arranged. It is raw. It is real.”

Recorded and Engineered by Graham Gilleberg at the beautiful Mount Tiger Studios in Whangarei.

“They are actually pretty good!”   - Olly Buckle

Alt rockers Old Salts hail from the shores of Bream Bay, Northland.

An "old salt" is defined as an old sailor or mariner who tells oral history and sea stories. While these boys don’t claim to be old salty sea dogs they all love spinning a yarn and share a connection with the ocean whether it's surfing, fishing or diving. They are brought together with a passion for playing music and want to create something a bit different.

Old Salts are made up of members

John Buckle (Lead Vocals / Guitar) Scott Brown ( Lead Guitar / BV) Marcus Jones (Bass / BV) Lucas Hargreaves (Drums / BV)

MILES CALDER Announces Nationwide Duo Tour of Aotearoa

Wellington songwriter Miles Calder has announced a nationwide duo tour of Aotearoa for May through to July 2022. Nominated for Best Folk Artist at this year's Aotearoa Music Awards, Miles returns off the back of his celebrated 2021 solo debut album Autopilot Life.

+ New Bonus Track
'Workman Song' Out Today

Wellington songwriter Miles Calder has announced a nationwide duo tour of Aotearoa for May through to July 2022. Nominated for Best Folk Artist at this year's Aotearoa Music Awards, Miles returns off the back of his celebrated 2021 solo debut album Autopilot Life. Today, he shares a bonus track recorded in the Autopilot Life sessions ‘Workman Song,' a rollicking folk-rock number about a vivid dream recalling figures from Miles' time in New York. Listen and download 'Workman Song' HERE. See full tour dates and ticket details below.

With an abundance of new material to test out, Miles is itching to get out and play shows again. The upcoming tour features Miles alongside bandmate and guitar maestro Chris Armour, playing re-imagined acoustic versions of previously released songs and forthcoming singles. Audiences can expect an intimate and musically lush performance, with Miles' spellbinding vocals and pristine arrangements taken to striking new territory. Kicking off NZ Music Month on May 19 at The Boathouse in Nelson, the duo will journey to regional destinations around the country such as Ahuahu Villas in New Plymouth, and Paisley Stage in Napier. The tour is rounded out by a full-band show in hometown Wellington on June 11 with Nick George on drums, Steve Moodie on bass, and Dayle Jellyman on keys joining the fun on-stage.

Miles says: “It’s been a long time since I’ve done a run of acoustic shows, and we decided some upcoming singles are a great opportunity for sitting down with crowds and doing something more intimate. After being rather locked in over the summer, I’m excited to bring songs to audiences again, especially in this stripped-back way. We still really wanted to have a full band hometown show to cut loose and make some noise too!"

Miles is now moving into an exciting new period of creativity, working with Sam Flynn Scott (The Phoenix Foundation) as a producer. The new work continues to build on the indie-folk and psychedelia that defined Autopilot Life, finding deeper atmospheres and rich arrangements that elevate Miles’ superb songwriting. Stay tuned for a new single 'Pushing & Pulling' before the tour gets underway.

TAITE MUSIC PRIZE DATE CHANGE

Independent Music NZ announces the Taite Music Prize award presentation ceremony moves to Sunday, May 29 to close out NZ Music Month on a high with an in-person award ceremony. The stars aligned last minute to make it possible for artists, and those that help them to be able to meet in person and celebrate.

The eponym for the awards is the late Dylan Taite, one of New Zealand’s most respected TV music journalists whose unique style captured some rare interviews over the decades including the Sex Pistols, Deep Purple, and the career-defining Bob Marley which are still referenced today.

Dylan’s son, John Taite comments, “They say time waits for no one. No one except Dylan Taite that is, who had a superhuman knack for stretching deadlines. Dad’s unmissable masterpieces were often hours, days and weeks late. It was more important to him to get things right for his audience. Because like every great artist he interviewed, Dylan knew that timing is everything - even when you’re late.”

The opportunity for the in-person event, albeit a reduced number, has been welcomed by many of the finalists with responses of “Great News!” and “Oh lovely!” flooding in .

The ceremony will once again take place at Tāmaki Makaurau’s Q Theatre and will be live blogged across multiple platforms for fans and music lovers around the motu to follow the events of the evening. The pared back event will include a whole lot of much-needed in person camaraderie for a sector of the arts that has had a prolific output during some of its toughest times.

The ten albums in contention for the 2022 Taite Music Prize are:
Listen on Spotify HERE

Anthonie Tonnon - Leave Love Out Of This (Slow TIme Records)
Dianne Swann - The War On Peace of Mind (Bads Music)

The Auckland Live Best Independent Debut Award celebrates the freshest talent of Aotearoa and the three finalists are:

The NZ On Air Outstanding Music Journalism Award is the first of its kind for Aotearoa New Zealand and the finalists are:

Murmur Tooth announces new collab, remix of Claptone's single "Beautiful" on Different Recordings, and original track on Heideton Records.

What happens when you mix a metal guitarist/classical pianist/singer-songwriter with a house producer? What indeed….

What happens when you mix a metal guitarist/classical pianist/singer-songwriter with a house producer? What indeed…. NZ musician, Murmur Tooth, and German producer/DJ, Lars Moston, met during the pandemic and started exploring how their polar opposite musical backgrounds could clash and combine. They are currently working on music that ranges from instrumental club tracks to vocal-based pop songs.

April will see their first official releases together, starting with the instrumental “You, Me, Us, Spines” on super-hyped German label, Heideton (22.04), and the remix of Claptone's new single "Beautiful" on Different Recordings (29.04). Also in the works is a full-length album funded by Initiative Musik, that combines Leah’s composition skills and vocal hooks with Lars’s production magic. The songs are dripping with layered harmonies and bursting with the weird and wonderful sounds of half broken instruments, salvaged childhood toys and repurposed household appliances.

Remixed by renowned Aotearoa musician TIKI TAANE, ‘Living Our Lives (Tiki Remix)’ is a colourful reimagining of the anthemic track by Wellington-based group SKRAM’s upcoming album.

Listen to ‘Living Our Lives (Tiki Remix)’ HERE

With its electric energy and incendiary rhythm, this track is all about enjoying life - no matter what it throws at you. The original track is explosive, with driving reggae, rock, pop vibes, while TAANE’s remix brings to it a tenaciously catchy bassline that finds its way into your body to make you groove with a high octane dance funk rhythm. This is an exciting track that would be just as at home in an underground rave, as it would be blasting over the airwaves.

“The remix came from some of the most exciting conversations I have had in my life,’ says lead singer Henry Ashby. “After sending TIKI a few tracks, he decided he wanted to work on a Remix of ‘Living Our Lives’ and I was literally floored. We truly feel pretty special to be putting out a track with an icon of the Aotearoa music industry.”
