Mim Jensen announces debut single Germaphobe + hometown single release show
Ōtautahi artist Mim Jensen has announced the release of her debut single Germaphobe. A visceral indie-rock anthem about a failing relationship, the song reflects on the moment you realise you’re growing apart and heading in opposite directions.
Ōtautahi artist Mim Jensen has announced the release of her debut single Germaphobe. A visceral indie-rock anthem about a failing relationship, the song reflects on the moment you realise you’re growing apart and heading in opposite directions. “Germaphobe was the result of some uncomfortable emotions and self-reflection. It’s about navigating an incredibly hard time in your life but ultimately learning how to stand in your own power.”
While Germaphobe is the first release for Mim, she has been prolific in the Ōtautahi live scene for years, her shows packed with energy and emotion. Her songwriting about love, loss, soaring highs and sweeping lows are as relatable as they are captivating. Alongside her band and fueled with heartache filled harmonies and destructive lead guitar lines, their shows are a sweeping spectrum of indie rock and passion that are not to be missed out on.
Germaphobe is being released on August 12th via Winegum Records, and accompanied by a single release show at Ōtautahi’s 12 Bar complete with full band! Tickets are available from Cosmic Ticketing.

Following on from their first album JACOBUS, THE BLESSED GHOST is shaped by the concept of a fictional love interest but with a twist.
“As the writing progressed I realised something quite odd. This fictional person was just everything that I did not like about myself, in all ways shapes and forms I’d started to write about my own demons and they were glaring at me, and that’s when I finally figured out what The Blessed Ghost was,” says Rory McDonald, the band’s frontman.
“Our first album JACOBUS took a lot out of me. It felt like a moment where I’d finally passed on the torch of my friend who had left me, but I was still in the dark.
“After speaking with my therapist she seemed to think it was quite common for artists of any kind to feel this sort of low after finishing any major project, so instead of revelling in it, I tried to grasp on to it,” says Rory.
“This album is not a story of a young adult trying to make his way through life, a breakup story or even one about loss, this was truly an adventure in self discovery, and it’s affected me in such a way that I know I’ll never be able to look at this time without pain-staking clarity because of it,” says Rory.
THE BLESSED GHOST houses 12 tracks including four previously released singles, ‘Skin’, ‘Small’, ‘We're Here, Love Is Somewhere Else’ and ‘Default’ and today’s release and lead single ‘Pursuit’.
‘Pursuit’ is described by Rory as "One of the most grandiose tracks we've ever recorded, I think the soundscapes that we try to take you through for the six minutes of ‘Pursuit’ is really a testament to how far we've come from the first record."
“This song represents how your dreams can turn into nightmares if you spend too long in the clouds. I’ve been told many times that when I used to play rugby I’d be more interested in the grass on the ground than the game itself. It might be an ADHD related curiosity, but I can’t blame everything on that. As I have touched on before, it is both blind and kind to be in your mind, says Rory.”
Watch in the coming weeks for an accompanying video for the single.

Break-through artist CAITLIN releases mellow single ‘Kitchen’
CAITLIN’s new single Kitchen follows two upbeat singles released earlier this year. This mellow indie-pop single is full of ethereal sounds, with a beautiful melody that will transport you to a quiet night’s beach sunset in an instant.
CAITLIN’s new single Kitchen follows two upbeat singles released earlier this year. This mellow indie-pop single is full of ethereal sounds, with a beautiful melody that will transport you to a quiet night’s beach sunset in an instant. CAITLIN’s new single is different to her past two driving singles, showing her diversity and sentimental writing.
The lyrics “Say it ain’t so is playing on the radio. If you knew the words maybe I’d take you home. You don’t play the drums, so I am wasting time. All you of your problems are never mine” sum up the main aspect of the song. As a musician, we can often feel pressured to date people that share the same love for music. Kitchen explores falling for someone who may not be a musician but supports you in every aspect of your life.
Inspired by indie-pop sensations Julia Jacklin, Faye Webster, and Spacey Jane, the songwriter has defined her unique sound in the indie-pop genre. Kitchen was inspired by the production of artist such as Ethan Gruska and Bon Iver. Produced and mixed by Ryan Fisherman, they created an open, mellow sounding song that carries a gentle power in the melody. Kitchen is the third release with announcement of her debut EP not far around the corner for this young songwriter. The song features backing vocals by Will McGillivray of Goodwill. Thomas Isbister features on lead guitar, keys and other elements of the soundscape. Both Christchurch artists well-respected for their talents.
“Kitchen is one of my favourite songs of the upcoming EP. It’s sentimental, and the understated lyrics in the chorus become more meaningful as the song progresses. I can’t wait for the world to hear it!”

After a successful weekend of launch events ‘Sing with a Mermaid’ at the New Zealand Maritime Musuem in Auckland, children’s music artist Claudia Robin Gunn is thrilled to share some early press that has been published this week about her new Creative NZ funded album Sing for the Sea - Little Wild Ocean Friends.
The tunes have been sailing their way through the audio ocean and managed to catch the ear of Baltimore music writer Greg Walker at @PrismReviews and New York digital media maven and children’s music reviewer Jeffrey Cohen (Geekdad, @MrJeff2000) who writes:
“If Florence and the Machine recorded an album of songs about the ocean and conservation, it would probably sound like Claudia Robin Gunn’s new collection, SING FOR THE SEA”
"one of the wonders of this collection of songs (as well as the music that she’s written that has come before it) is that she could easily fit in the canon of great women songwriters before her: Sarah McLaughlin, Taylor Swift, Imogen Heap...Claudia Robin Gunn has the privilege of not only being a killer songwriter but also of living on the beautiful sea-surrounded island of New Zealand... This album is an album children around the world need and would love to hear."
July 15th sees the companion instrumental release for this album - designed to help kids and families access the music for easy sing alongs in tandem with the chords and lyric book Claudia and her sister Melissa R Gunn have created, with illustrations throughout by artist Elise De Silva.

Don McGlashan released his new album, Bright November Morning, following the release of three singles; ‘Now’s The Place’, ‘Go Back In’ and ‘All The Goodbyes In The World’. The glowing reviews and accolades have been rolling in and the audience have spoken by buying up large with sales pushing Don McGlashan’s album to Number 1 on the New Zealand Recorded Music Album Charts.
Surprisingly, this was the first number one album for Aotearoa’s songwriter-storyteller, Don McGlashan. And he was thrilled. “I’m somewhat overwhelmed that the album went straight into the NZ charts at No. 1…. That’s a first for me. I’ve had, I think, 5 top-5 albums over the course of a 40 year career in various collaborations and solo, but never the top spot ‘til now. Huge thanks to all of you for listening, being supportive, and being part of the team.” - Don McGlashan
Bright November Morning, is McGlashan’s fourth solo album, and is an essential addition to his remarkable output. It has all the glittering McGlashan touches in place: from the detail-perfect narratives of local life (the neighbours looking in when we take the curtains down, swimming and seeing Russian container ships on the horizon) to the strummy melodicism with detours into something noisier, and on to those welcome and welcoming choruses.
The new album was recorded in Lyttelton, Auckland and Vancouver, and full of inspired playing from Shayne P Carter (Straitjacket Fits, Dimmer), Chris O’Connor (SJD, Phoenix Foundation) and James Duncan (SJD, Dimmer), Bright November Morning marks a new stage in Don McGlashan’s generous and humane songbook.
