CHRISTABEL STEPS INTO CHARACTER FOR NEW RELEASE ‘JEALOUS’

Following the successful release of Ankle Deep, Christabel’s next offering, Jealous, showcases a new side to the artist as she steps into character. Following the successful release of Ankle Deep, Christabel’s next offering, Jealous, showcases a new side to the artist as she steps into character. The fierce, catchy and powerful tune was created prior to her travels to Los Angeles, in collaboration with writer Ash Wallace (Foley) and producer/writer Joseph Faris.

“This song, unlike most of mine, is not based on personal experience this time!” says Christabel.

“Jealous was carved from observing toxic relationships between friends and people I knew. The kind of relationship that really isn't ever going to work, the kicking, screaming, on and off again, absolute chalk and cheese kind of relationship. This was my chance to put myself in their shoes, become a whole new character, and then do the same on-screen.”

Alongside the single is a 60’s inspired music video, of which the narrative follows an unfaithful husband, played by actor Kon Podprugin (who recently starred as a Russian prisoner in the latest season of the hit Netflix show Stranger Things) and a revengeful wife, played by Christabel. Filmed in downtown Los Angeles, with a young, talented group of friends, Christabel’s team included director Mason Cade Packer, and her partner Luca Turner (producer & DOP).

Made with the support of NZ On Air, Jealous is out Friday 12th August on all streaming platforms.

Tāmaki Makaurau artist Jackson Boswell is bringing a new depth to his songwriting, vocals and performance in latest release, Games. Following the 2021 releases of singles Miss You and Not Quite Enough, at age 15, the artist is about to turn 17 and is excited for the next era of his music.

“I’ve been exploring a multitude of musical genres and finding my sound over the past couple years,” Jackson explains, “but I am confident that Games is the start of an extremely exciting project that encompasses me as an artist, and as a human being, perfectly.”

As an accomplished drummer, singer and multi-instrumentalist, the young artist has been pushing boundaries with his craft, and collaborated with producer Christian Tjandrawinata to see what they could come up with for this track. Together, they have developed the texture of this work by experimenting with alternative sounds and audio effects, which has resulted in a stunning backdrop to Jackon’s strong vocals.

Games follows the narrative of a deteriorating relationship, and the confusion that can come with it. The inspiration for the track came from Jackon’s friends, and the artist witnessing a pivotal moment in their break up when one proclaimed to the other, “I don’t want to play your games.”

The track is accompanied by a stunning visualiser, created by Christian and himself, that includes powerful performance shots and abstract editing, continuing to prove how far the young artist has evolved. “I’m excited for people to hear this new era of ‘Jackson Boswell’ and too look forward to what’s coming next,” says Jackson. Games is out Friday 12th August on all streaming platforms.

Kiwi artist Sylvee hits with a healing message.

New Zealand singer and songwriter Sylvee makes a powerful statement with her new single ‘Slow’ – an epic love song, with a strong message on mental health.

New Zealand singer and songwriter Sylvee makes a powerful statement with her new single ‘Slow’ – an epic love song, with a strong message on mental health.

“Slow is about the importance of talking about tough things with safe people. Knowing we don’t have to take on every challenge alone, especially if we don’t have the mental tools to do so” explains Sylvee aka Sarah Ryland,
who wrote the song solo, and worked with collaborator Joel Zaia who takes production credit.

The track remains true to Sylvee’s signature sound of etherial vocals and speaks loudly to a continuing issue many people face without rescources.

Sylvee’s exquisite vocals and warm melodies exude raw emotion and intricately weave together a land- scape of poetic lyricism and production, which shifts effortlessly from delicate to soaring.

Hailing from Nelson; a city renowned for punching well above its weight when it
comes to fostering musical talent (think Broods, Robinson), Sylvee’s journey in music has taken her from singing in the primary school choir and tinkering around at home on the piano, to recording in studios across the globe.

Sylvee released her debut EP ‘LIFE ON MARS’ in 2019, which she wrote and recorded between home in New Zealand and in London. She returned in the second half of 2020 with singles ‘Champagne’ and ‘Retrograde World’ (Simon Gooding) in 2021, paving the way for the release of ‘Slow’.

Leaving fans waiting in anticipation for the talented artist’s next move, Sylvee hints “follows in the footsteps of
‘Champagne’ and ‘Slow’.”

Mim Jensen releases debut single Germaphobe + plays hometown single release show

Ōtautahi artist Mim Jensen has released her debut single Germaphobe. A visceral indie-rock anthem about a failing relationship, the song reflects on the moment you realise you’re growing apart and heading in opposite directions.

Ōtautahi artist Mim Jensen has released her debut single Germaphobe. A visceral indie-rock anthem about a failing relationship, the song reflects on the moment you realise you’re growing apart and heading in opposite directions. “Germaphobe was the result of some uncomfortable emotions and self-reflection. It’s about navigating an incredibly hard time in your life but ultimately learning how to stand in your own power.”

While Germaphobe is the first release for Mim, she has been prolific in the Ōtautahi live scene for years, her shows packed with energy and emotion. Her songwriting about love, loss, soaring highs and sweeping lows are as relatable as they are captivating. Alongside her band and fueled with heartache filled harmonies and destructive lead guitar lines, their shows are a sweeping spectrum of indie rock and passion that are not to be missed out on.

Germaphobe is the first single from her debut album which will be out via Winegum Records in 2023.

You can listen to the song here, and Christchurch dwellers can find tickets for the release-day show at Cosmic Ticketing! Follow Mim on Instagram and Facebook.

Known for a hard-hitting sound drenched in rock and blues, Sea Mouse will be featuring the music from their recent release ‘Evil Heart’. This new collection of music favors a grittier approach that combines classic blues stylings and modern garage fuzz tones. It’s an approach which can be heard clearly on the EP’s three singles, ‘Evil Heart’, ‘Quit That Job’ and ‘Cold and Lonely’ which received play listing from NZ on Airs ‘New Tracks’ Scheme.

Made up of Seamus Johnson (Guitar and Vocals), Scott Maynard (Bass), and Thomas Friggens (Drums), Sea Mouse formed in 2017 and quickly set about shaking up the local music scene. Creating a unique blend of sounds from the Delta blues of the 1930s, to mammoth guitar-driven garage rock tunes, coupled with a mesmerizing live show, Sea Mouse has gone from strength to strength and this is only the beginning!

Don’t sleep on Sea Mouse! Delivering a punch-packing, viciously high energy live show, which translates brilliantly from turntable to stage, this is one band you NEED to see in the flesh.

Three Boys Brewery presents DarkSpace12

Ōtautahi’s much loved multi-venue mini-fest ‘DarkSpace’ returns to Saint Asaph Street on Saturday 10th September with a stacked line up of South Island musical talent performing across Darkroom, Space Academy and 12 Bar.

Ōtautahi’s much loved multi-venue mini-fest ‘DarkSpace’ returns to Saint Asaph Street on Saturday 10th September with a stacked line up of South Island musical talent performing across Darkroom, Space Academy and 12 Bar.

With thirteen acts to see throughout the evening, ticket holders will be able to move between the three venues from 7pm till late for what could only be described as the ultimate collaboration and celebration of Ōtautahi thriving music community.

The eastern fringe of the city where all three venues are located has become the 03’s hub for independent live music following the Christchurch quakes. The first DarkSpace was held in 2016 and showcased six bands in one night across the two neighbouring venues, Darkroom and Space Academy. During the years to follow, five DarkSpace events were organised between the two venues before 12 Bar’s opening in 2020. The first three-venue event, ‘Zorza’ was presented by RDU 98.5FM in November that year as a united response to the impacts that the Covid-19 pandemic had brought upon the local grassroots music industry. After a couple more lockdowns, DarkSpace finally returns under the apt moniker of DarkSpace12.

“Each venue curated their own line up for DarkSpace12, selecting a few of their favourite acts to invite to be part of the festival. As venues and individuals we all have such different musical tastes, and this helped to curate a line up that covered a range of genres,” Shaw explains. “We wanted a mix of newer and more established acts, some known names and some new discoveries, and a good mix of talent that celebrated diversity in terms of folks who can often unfortunately be under-represented in mainstream music events” says Shaw.

The end result is a line up that will showcase and celebrate emerging local acts who regularly play at the venues such as Saint Peter’s Thursday and Just Another June, as well as including some more established acts, a bunch of familiar faces who have been in the music community for a good while now with the likes of Violet French and The Horrible, and Opawa 45s.

Shaw is originally from Ōtepoti and says she is most excited to have her home town favourites Night Lunch on the line up. She’ll also take to the stage with her own band, Bin Day, while 12 Bar Duty Manager Hollan Brabet will be behind the drum kit for Avon Dads.

Rather than being based around one particular headline act that the night builds up to, the festival’s strength is in the line up as a whole. The diverse programming aims to expose attendees to something new that they may have not experienced before and for that unexpected moment to potentially become their DarkSpace12 highlight.

Tickets are available for purchase from Under The Radar
