Auckland 4-piece band The RVMES (pronounced ‘The Rooms’) release the debut single from their forthcoming album Simple Things. The track carries a simple, uplifting message about forgetting life’s troubles while tying in sounds inspired by the classic 80’s ‘Dunedin sound’ along with their own modern flavors.

What’s Troublin’ You is about making time for yourself and asking how your mates are. Everybody has troubles and everybody needs a night off to enjoy themselves, so crank up the volume, have a kōrero with a friend and do just as The RVMES suggest in this fresh new single.

Recorded in their home studio, mixed by the bands previous guitarist Miro Gibson and mastered by Luke Finlay at Primal Mastering. This track brings the classic clean and organic sound The RVMES are known for and have always brought to the table.

The RVMES plan to hit the roads of Aotearoa for a Summer tour of Simple Things with their newest member on lead guitar, Richard Moore. Dates & details TBA.

TE KAAHU’s critically-acclaimed debut album Te Kaahu O Rangi can now be heard like never before! From today the nine-track album will be available in Spatial Audio with support for Dolby Atmos, exclusively on Apple Music. It comes as TE KAAHU prepares to perform this week at BIGSOUND– Australia’s leading new music festival and conference.

Te Kaahu O Rangi has drawn praise from critics for its exquisite songcraft and sonics, which take the listener on a captivating journey. Now, thanks to revolutionary technology in sound from Apple Music, fans of the album can listen in Spatial Audio, which allows artists to create an immersive audio experience with true multidimensional sound and clarity.

The TE KAAHU album is among only a handful of New Zealand-made albums currently available in Spatial Audio, and Theia (the Aotearoa talent behind the TE KAAHU project) is thrilled that this body of work, which is fully in te reo Māori and pays tribute to her tūpuna wāhine, can be celebrated in such a way.

“For me TE KAAHU has always been about connecting the past, Te Ao Tawhito with the future, Te Ao Hōu. These waiata are steeped in old-school sentiment and language but connect with a younger audience too simply because it’s from a rangatahi perspective. It’s an honour to have these songs presented in such a way that people can truly experience their wairua.

“When we were making this record, we put such care into ensuring that the vocals were front and centre. And so to now hear it in the Spatial Audio format is incredible. The only way I can convey the feeling is to imagine being in a cathedral and hearing the choir all around you and above,” says Theia.

The album was mixed in Spatial Audio by the AMA-winning Jol Mulholland (Troy Kingi, Racing, French For Rabbits) at The Lab in Auckland and mastered by Grammy- winning Brian Lucey (Lizzo, Post Malone, Cordae).

By default, Apple Music automatically plays Spatial Audio tracks with support for Dolby Atmos on all AirPods and Beats headphones with an H1 or W1 chip, as well as the built-in speakers in the latest versions of iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

This news comes following a massive few months for TE KAAHU. The album’s release in May was supported by a triumphant launch show at the Tuning Fork in Auckland for Matariki. It has also seen nominations for ‘Best New Artist’ in the inaugural Rolling Stone NZ Awards, ‘Best Reo Māori Album’ at the Waiata Māori Music Awards and a nod in the Top 5 at this year’s APRA Maioha Award. TE KAAHU is also only one of seven Aotearoa acts invited to perform at this year’s BIGSOUND in Brisbane. Theia and her band will perform Tuesday September 6 at Black Bear Lodge (9.50pm) and Wednesday September 7 at the Press Club (11.40pm).

The pandemic gave members Ryan Culleton, Shannon Coulomb and Scott Nicolson of experimental recording project, Impostor Syndrome, an opportunity to further their learning and creative experimentation. The results will be shared on their debut album titled Oriens, to be released on October 28th, 2022.

If lead single Plastic Eyes took the listener on an apologetic journey, then Locksmith, the second single from Oriens, grabs the listener by the hand and takes them full force through a poetic trip, where verses and choruses are blurred and the end result leaving one feeling armed with renewed knowledge and sense of self.

Speaking of the track, front-man Ryan Culleton says, “Locksmith is a song about the gifts of knowledge that are given to us as children.  Exploring the idea that words and actions of the people that raised us as children are still having a powerful effect on our lives today”.

Māori Music Award finalists; IA Release new song 'Te Aho Tapu' for Waiata Anthems Week

Today, Māori Music Award finalists, IA, release a new song 'Te Aho Tapu' as part of Waiata Anthems Week 2022

Announce debut EP

The Art Of out Jan 2023

Today, Māori Music Award finalists, IA, (pronounced te reo: ‘e-ah’) release a new song 'Te Aho Tapu' as part of Waiata Anthems Week 2022. Based in Waikato, the trio of young musicians are known for bringing taonga pūoro (traditional Māori instruments) into the modern music realm. Catch IA performing at the Going Global Music Summit showcase in Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland this Saturday.

‘Te Aho Tapu’ is a velvety R&B track composed using Ngūru (traditional Māori flute). Reti Hedley, son of Rangiiria and lead singer of IA, says 'Te Aho Tapu' is a love song which takes inspiration from raranga, the art of traditional Māori weaving. Their goal was to create a waiata that encapsulates the two worlds of aroha and raranga in an authentic way.

“Waiata Anthems Week is a catalyst for Te Reo Māori within the music industry. As we know, te reo Māori is a metaphoric language and a language that provides insight into the world view of Māori, and in this case weaving. It is exciting to know that with the help of Waiata Anthems we can share this beautiful language with our iwi throughout Aotearoa,” says Reti.

‘Te Aho Tapu’ marks the first single release from IA's forthcoming debut EP, The Art Of, due out January 2023. The EP will encompass a total of six waiata. Each waiata is inspired by one of the following Toi Māori artforms; Whakairo, Tā moko, Raranga, Kapa Haka, Tāonga Pūoro and Mau Rākau. The band has appointed an expert from each of these sectors to engage as a consultant to help guide the creative writing process and provide authentic inspiration for each composition.

Māori Music Award finalists IA create indigenous soul music. Their compositions blend old with new and feature the voices found with traditional Māori instruments/taonga pūoro. The puoro voices are blended with modern instruments, ancient poetic writing style and modern soulful melodies. IA has been discovering new frontiers with traditional Maori instruments by using taonga puoro as the driving force in their creative process. Featuring Moetu Smith, Reti Hedley and Turoa Pohatu, the Waikato based band is dedicated to showcasing taonga puoro and Te Reo Maori in their music.

ANDERSON ROCIO SHOWCASES HER RAW TALENT IN LATEST RELEASE ‘MOOD SWINGS’

Following the 2022 releases of ‘My World’ and ‘Some Days’, Anderson Rocio’s next offering, ‘Mood Swings’, is her most stripped back single to date.

Following the 2022 releases of ‘My World’ and ‘Some Days’, Anderson Rocio’s next offering, ‘Mood Swings’, is her most stripped back single to date.

Audiences were first introduced to the track through a sync placement on Season 3, Episode 10 of the Oprah Winfrey Network’s show All Rise, of which the artist admits she forgot she wrote it. “I heard it and thought, this needs to be out in the world,” Anderson says, “there’s just something about it that I love.”

Written about being on the receiving end of someone else’s mood, Anderson explains “people's moods can change like the weather and when we aren't communicating, we're left with the crashing waves of moods.” She then poses the question of “if we knew what someone was thinking, maybe we could understand them better? Maybe we could say the right thing.”

Complementing the lyrics of the track are perfectly curated layers of production. The ukulele picks up the rhythm and reflects an ‘ache’ feeling half way through, with acoustic guitar and rain throughout. Stating there was “an honesty and imperfection in the original recording,” Anderson kept the first vocal take for the finished master, truly showcasing the raw talent the artist holds.

BENJAMIN MACK FINDS INSPIRATION IN HIS ‘LONELY WINTER CASTLE’

Tāmaki Makaurau artist Benjamin Mack releases his first EP ‘Lonely Winter Castle’, on the last day of Southern Winter.

Tāmaki Makaurau artist Benjamin Mack releases his first EP ‘Lonely Winter Castle’, on the last day of Southern Winter.

Featuring the already released single ‘Up For Grabs’, the EP includes four brand new songs; ‘Darling’, ‘Back and Forth’, ‘Let The Doorbell Ring’ and ‘Dusty Walls - Demo’.

The narrative of the extended play “in a sense, follows the five stages of grief,” Benjamin explains. “Each track flows into another state of mind, starting with an over-romanticised relationship, then motions of denial, anger, delusion and finally, acceptance.”

Written throughout his time in the Parachute Development Programme, whilst house-sitting in his ‘lonely winter castle’, the artist drew inspiration from those around him for this fictional world. Working with his collaborators on the project, he got into the studio to explore themes of loneliness. Benjamin describes the experience as a “pivotal point in my writing and key to my development as an artist.”

You can next catch Benjamin Mack performing live alongside Masaya, Friday 21st October at The Yard in Raglan, the first of a few shows to be announced this Spring. Tickets are available from ticketspace.nz.

‘Lonely Winter Castle’ is out now, on all streaming platforms.
