Alt-country artist Katie Thompson is gearing up for an exciting return to the music scene with the release of her new single "Do You Think Of Me?".

Katie garnered recognition as a finalist in the 2020 New Zealand Country Music Awards, earning nominations for Best Country Song and Best Country Artist with her third studio album, "Bittersweet."

Since then, Katie shifted her focus to nurturing her music agency, Quirky Music, and had planned to return to performing live around 2025. However, fate had other plans and an extraordinary opportunity knocked on her door this past May. She received an invitation to be the opening act for the iconic singer-songwriter, Don McLean, at the renowned Christchurch Town Hall.

"After a three year hiatus this certainly catapulted me back onto the stage. That was also my first time playing the Town Hall. What a way to get the show back on the road!"

In July she went on to perform at the prestigious Go Live Festival with her band alongside 13 other local acts with headliner Kiwi music icon Tiki Taane.

The new single, "Do You Think Of Me?" is a collaborative track co-written by Katie along with friends and fellow band members Victoria and Andy Knopp.

Tauranga Alt-Rock duo Midwave Breaks are set to storm the Rock Airwaves again with their scorching new single Stonewall.

STREAM/DOWNLOAD HERE

Clocking in at under 3 minutes, Stonewall delivers a sonic punch from the outset, fusing retrospective dirty-rock-n-roll with a fresh-rock aesthetic, and merging seamlessly with the pulsating energy of a signature Midwave Breaks Chorus, offering yet another sing-along anthem for their growing fanbase across Aotearoa.

Stonewall channels the same high-octane energy as the band’s recent radio hit Souvenirs, which secured it’s place as the most played kiwi song on NZ Rock Radio across April-June, climbing to #2 and spending over 4 months in the top 10 Radioscope Rock Chart, as well as coming in at #198 on the listener-voted Rock 2000 countdown, the highest kiwi debut for 2023.

The dynamic collaboration of Bruce Conlon (singer-songwriter & guitarist), and renowned NZ Music Hall of Fame Drummer Paul Russell (former Supergroove, Che Fu) have spent the past few months in the studio diligently crafting new material, and are stoked to unveil Stonewall as a first glimpse into a new wave of inspired creativity.

Drummer Russell explains Stonewall’s unconventional origin:

“So Bruce hit his pop-up pool with the lawnmower, putting a hole in it, and had to take it down. He’d been putting it off for a while, and as he was heading out to dismantle it, was thinking to himself “I don’t wanna do it but I gotta do it”, and very quickly that became a phrase he was singing in his head, which formed the basis and the opening line of the track!”

Kirikiriroa’s Bird Machine navigate regret and redemption with new single ‘Closure’

Employing Bird Machine’s signature dreamy aesthetic, ‘Closure’ is an ethereal mix of electronic and organic sounds. Staying true to their D.I.Y. ethos, the song was recorded and mixed entirely by the pair in their suburban home studio.

Alternative rock-pop duo Bird Machine (Jenna and Luke Grbin) have today release their hotly anticipated, candid new single ‘Closure’.

Employing Bird Machine’s signature dreamy aesthetic, ‘Closure’ is an ethereal mix of electronic and organic sounds. Staying true to their D.I.Y. ethos, the song was recorded and mixed entirely by the pair in their suburban home studio.

For Bird Machine, the new track serves as a measure of their evolving style. ‘Closure’ actually emerged while resurrecting a much earlier song which had never been produced. In the process, it was reworked into something quite different to the original, but has benefitted from springboarding off that initial spark of inspiration.

Not ones to sit still, Luke and Jenna discuss what’s behind their ever-morphing sound.

“We’ve found our own sound is still evolving as we find a balance between our distinct musical backgrounds,” says Jenna

The result for ‘Closure’ is an alt-pop aesthetic that nods to the dreampop of the 80s and 90s underground by emphasising a lavish sonic texture, while drawing on contemporary pop melodicism.

“‘Closure’ reflects us as artists by showcasing our ability to craft emotionally-charged and introspective compositions,” say the pair. Indeed, the ebb and flow of the music mirrors the complexity of the lyrical themes, which explore love in partner relationships, regret, and redemption.

Accompanying today’s release is a beautiful music video. For this, Bird Machine took matters into their own hands, with Luke behind the camera and Jenna handling the editing. Set against the backdrop of Hamilton's twilight hours, the video captures a poignant blend of loss, and hope, that perfectly harmonises with the song's themes.

Hot on the coattails of standalone single ‘Hellos and Frowns’, Bird Machine’s new single marks the first to be released from an upcoming sophomore EP, which is due for release early 2024. ‘Closure’, the band says, provides a glimpse into the emotional depth and musical diversity Bird Machine are exploring in their upcoming releases.

Having already proven their song-crafting mettle, and with so much promise on the horizon, make sure you don’t miss a beat from Bird Machine. Listen to ‘Closure’ today on all streaming platforms!

BYLLIE-JEAN RELEASES 'RUNNING AMUCK' 2ND SINGLE FROM DEBUT EP, FILTER

“Somebody stole our land, and everyone knows who did it…” Is the powerful statement driving the provocative new single from 2022 APRA Silver Scroll Maioha Award-winner Byllie-jean, ‘Running Amuck’.

“Somebody stole our land, and everyone knows who did it…”

Is the powerful statement driving the provocative new single from 2022 APRA Silver Scroll Maioha Award-winner Byllie-jean, ‘Running Amuck’.

Teased out in the signature blues tones Byllie-jean (Ngāti Kahungunu ki Heretaunga, Ngāti Pahauwera) is renowned for, the second single from her debut EP Filter isn’t shy about laying a bar or two of truth. Grown out of “a wee ditty”, the song’s breathy pace is driven by percussive vocals and hypnotic melody. And, although ‘Running Amuck’ is pithy and political, Byllie-jean says that isn’t the overarching kaupapa of the EP.

“Most of the other tracks, written over the past four years, are quite introspective,” she reflects. “Each song has its own mini-moment, which creates a bigger moment in continuum across the EP. There’s a lot in it about seeing the truth, seeing through the bullshit. It’s about my own mana motuhake, finding and standing in my own truth.”

The challenge in the studio was adding music to a song written a capella whilst roaming the hills around Whakaraupō/Lyttelton Harbour. Working with longtime friend and producer Chris Wethey (Deva Mahal, Tami Neilson, Holly Arrowsmith), recording ‘Running Amuck’ was a process of elimination that required bold simplicity.

Scheduled for release in Tīhema/December 2023, Filter is an exploration of Byllie-jean’s evolution as a wahine Māori artist. The video for 'Running Amuck’ was an exercise in playing with the level to which she allows herself to be seen.

“I am a kuia now, drawing close to welcoming my third mokopuna in to te ao mārama,” the artist shares. “Riding on the tailwind of my predecessors, I put my all into this work, but I have the luxury of a grandmother when it comes to not taking myself too seriously. I have had to consider how I approach visibility as a woman when only the young and pretty are represented, everything is an experiment and I'm willing to venture into the unknown, however frightening.

“Although ‘Running Amuck’ is mostly satire, it has an edge to it and I attempted to push that edge in my performance, I'm aware my tīpuna are watching and my children and mokopuna, I want them to see that I love myself as I am. Radical, I know. I love my aunties and my kuia exactly as they are too, I want to exhibit a classified ads type of aroha: 'as is where is'. This is what sovereignty looks like to me."
