Moana & the Tribe release final single & video - ‘Ātahu’, from new album ONO
ONO means six in Māori. It is also the title of a concept album project that begins in Aotearoa New Zealand and travels the world. Each song showcases the voice, language and culture of six Indigenous wāhine from lands where Moana & the Tribe has performed.
Six Songs, Six Nations, One Voice
The final single, ‘Ātahu’ is released today, Monday, October 28. It just happens to be a significant date in Aotearoa New Zealand. In 1835 He Whakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tireni recognised the sovereignty of Māori tribes or nations in Aotearoa. In 2024, October 28 is also the Labour Day public holiday commemorating the struggle to achieve an eight-hour working day back in 1890 - and the ongoing rights of workers.
‘Ātahu’ is a mixture of spoken word, whispers, haunting refrains and ‘oli chants. The theme of the waiata is magic. It’s a love charm. The guest vocalist, Kaumakaiwa Kanaka'ole weaves a spell in and around the seductive groove created by Paddy Free.
Moana Maniapoto reflects, “I was keen to find a Hawaiian vocalist for our final song but struggled. I mentioned it to reo advocate Hemi Kelly and he recommended Kaumakaiwa. My manager Sol tracked her down and I flew to O‘ahu to be with her when she recorded her vocals. Kaumakaiwa reminded me that we’d met 20 years ago amid the dusty, majestic ruins of Greece. My group represented Aotearoa New Zealand in the Cultural Olympiad that led up to the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
“Kaumakaiwa was a teenager then, the star of the Hawaiians’ group. Since then the transgender Hawaiian (mahu wahine) has been described as “the voice of a generation”. It was astounding and perhaps prescient that we ended up collaborating again twenty years after - like it was meant to be."

ONO means six in Māori. It is also the title of a concept album project that begins in Aotearoa New Zealand and travels the world. Each song showcases the voice, language and culture of six Indigenous wāhine from lands where Moana & the Tribe has performed.
The Māori lyrics written by Te Manahau Scotty Morrison are inspired by traditional karakia (incantations) and pay homage to “people power”, relationships and language.
From the Arctic Circle to the highlands of Scotland; from Canada to the misty mountains of Taipei; out of Australia and up to the islands of Hawai‘i, producers Paddy Free and Moana Maniapoto mix sublime vocals with electronica-dub to create a World Music album that symbolises hope and unity.
ONO, Moana & the Tribe’s sixth studio album, is released November 1, 2024 on LP, CD and digital via Black Pearl Ltd.

Aotearoa alt-pop trio PAPERCITY unveil driving new single ‘Sofa’
An epic combination of electronic beats, gritty guitars, textural synths and a vulnerable message, ‘Sofa’ is yet another exciting hit from PAPERCITY
Listen to ‘Sofa’ HERE
Tāmaki Makaurau-based trio PAPERCITY have today released their soon-to-be smash hit ‘Sofa’!
An epic combination of electronic beats, gritty guitars, textural synths and a vulnerable message, ‘Sofa’ is yet another exciting hit from PAPERCITY (Alex Hargreaves, Sam Edmonds, Jack Rollinson), the group have cultivated a uniquely alternative synth-pop sound, with hints of emo and punk.
“It’s about the isolation of feeling hurt and the effort to keep your struggles hidden,” says lead singer and guitarist Alex - who also directed the track’s extraordinary music video - out 1 November!
‘Sofa’ follows the trio’s 2019 and 2020 singles ‘Plastic’ and ‘Feel’, the latter of which saw huge love across Aotearoa and abroad - placing on both the Hot NZ Singles Chart and the NZ iTunes Chart. The track saw radioplay across NZ, was added to BBC Radio One’s Hot New Music and Alt Indie & Electric Pop playlists, and the music video won the Top of the South Film Festival Best Music Video award.
Alongside their self-directed visuals, PAPERCITY are a truly grassroots project - with today’s track produced by Sam’s brother Josh Edmonds, recorded across the group’s hometown of Nelson and Josh’s home studio in Auckland. The group also collaborated with friend Ryan Beehre (Minuit) on the track, playing with new sonic textures and music that “feels really exciting to play live.”
“‘Sofa’ is one of those songs that you write in a dark room alone and then nervously play to the band a couple of months later,” says Alex. “We spent a lot of time recording lots of little synth parts for this song. There’s a lot of guitars that sound like synths and synths that sound like guitars in it.”
Alex has directed all of the group’s videos thus far - alongside directing music videos for the likes of Alien Weaponry, Jujulipps and Devilskin. Their epic upcoming clip is loosely based off the 1960’s science fiction TV series The Prisoner and was filmed across Tāmaki Makaurau and Queenstown.
“In The Prisoner, A guy wakes up in a strange village and, if he tries to leave, a great big orb chases him down and tries to swallow him,” explains Alex. “It ties into the feeling of your emotions or thoughts chasing you - but in the video, it’s the whole band trying to get away from the orb, because you’re not really alone.”
An incredible display of the group's multifaceted talent across music and storytelling, ‘Sofa’ is bound to take Aotearoa listeners by storm - so you won’t want to miss it!
Straight out of Nelson, NZ, PAPERCITY is a hard-edged pop band that packs a punch. They blend relatable lyrics with a dose of guitar-based aggression and unforgettable hooks, creating a sound that's both raw and infectious. Their live shows are a high-octane blast, charged with a distinctive punk-inspired energy that leaves a lasting impression.

Bona fide Aotearoa talent L.A. Mitchell (Lauren Barus) has today peeled back another layer to her artistry, with her raw and bold new single, ‘Mother’.
Ruminating on the trials of the 21st century, ‘Mother’ is a masterclass in the tender songwriting capabilities of L.A. Mitchell - an artist who has proved time and time again her gift for soaring and introspective reflections on the human experience. The track treats us to the grandeur of Lauren’s piano, cinematic drums and emotive vocals - beautifully encapsulating the soundscape of motherhood, coming of age, and yearning for change.
“‘Mother’ is a lament from the perspective of the child watching the world, and the distractions that remove the attention of the parent,” explains Lauren. “But also a lament from a parent that this world isn’t fit to raise a child in. That what you have to do to meet the needs materially directly impacts your ability to meet their needs emotionally, and that we constantly compromise and constantly lament having to compromise.”
Already an established force in Aotearoa music, Lauren’s expansive career has seen her writing, touring, and recording with kiwi legends such as Dave Dobbyn, Bic Runga, Tim Finn, Anna Coddington, Sola Rosa, Dukes, Troy Kingi, Dallas Tamaira, and more. Just recently, she was a finalist for the 2024 Best Folk Artist award at the AMAs for her work with husband Matt Barus in Terrible Sons.
Now, ‘Mother’ takes us deeper into Lauren’s world, following recent singles ‘Glove’ (Rolling Stone, Radio Active, R1, The May Magazine) and ‘Slow Dancing’ (RadioScope Alt Chart, 95bFM, Radio Active, RDU, R1) in what is proving to be a triumphant return to solo releases.
Written during Lauren’s own journey of shifting her music-making journey through parenthood, ‘Mother’ was written and recorded at the artist’s home studio in Diamond Harbour, alongside producer Mark Perkins. Regular collaborator Naomi Haussman worked with the artist on yet another gorgeous visualiser for the track, set to be released in the coming weeks.
“This song is a protest against the insufficiency of our current world-view on what is best for the future; the ignorance of leadership to properly value parenting, caring, nurturing and gentleness,” says Lauren. “We all absorb social narratives to be more productive and economically driven, while all the things that matter to our kids - attention, love, nurturing, comfort, tenderness and gentleness - are the opposite, and require the opposite from us.
“I hate watching what that cycle does to me and what conclusions my children are drawing about themselves because of what they see.”
A powerful, poignant and defiant message from L.A. Mitchell, fans will not want to miss the opportunity to bare witness to her upcoming national solo tour! Alongside these stunning performances, Lauren offers a chance for women to reconnect with their voice and power, leading a series of vocal workshops while on the road!

Aotearoa’s BORDERLINE release fresh new single ‘HEARTBEAT’
With the release of their new single, ‘Heartbeat’, the four-piece have kicked things up another notch in offering new and longtime fans alike an indication of exciting things to come.
Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland)-based indie pop group Borderline have been generating significant momentum in Aotearoa/NZ in recent years. Their blend of tight indie arrangements, coupled with natural confidence and charm as stage performers have firmly positioned them on the Aotearoa/NZ radar as ones to watch.
With the release of their new single, ‘Heartbeat’, the four-piece have kicked things up another notch in offering new and longtime fans alike an indication of exciting things to come.
The band, comprising Ben Glanfield (vocals, guitar), Matthew McFadden (guitar), Jackson Boswell (drums, vocals) and Max Harries (bass), have known each other since childhood. Together, they have grown a natural chemistry as friends and now, musicians. As a band, Borderline’s debut EP Perfect Movie Scene introduced a band with a clear vision, and music to match their bright and vibrant energy.
‘Heartbeat’ continues to fuel this connection and journey. Recorded at the iconic Roundhead Studios with producer Joel Jones (Will Swinton, alayna), Borderline also worked with the talented Nic Manders (Georgia Lines, Six60) and Vivek Gabriel (The Paper Kites, Mice on Stilts) on mixing and mastering.
Of the song, Borderline explains that ‘Heartbeat’ is the start of a new era for the band.
“We’re starting to focus more on what the song makes you feel and that was really exciting to explore in the studio. We put real emotion into the songwriting and sound choices, and it really captures the essence of not only who we are as a band, but as people too. That’s something others will be able to resonate with.”
BORDERLINE
Accompanying the release of ‘Heartbeat’, Borderline have shared the single’s music video, directed by collaborator Tom Grut (Jujulipps, Foley). Rich in colour and warmth, the video captures the essence of the band with ease.
The nostalgic energy matches some of the messaging of the song itself with the band commenting, “Lyrically, ‘Heartbeat’ was inspired by the portrayal of high school proms/balls in nostalgic movies and series. We tried our best to capture the high energy and good feelings you get from those moments on screen.” BORDERLINE
As a live band, Borderline have been racking up impressive support slots in Aotearoa, performing alongside artists including Drax Project, ZED and Teenage Dads. To support the release of ‘Heartbeat’, the band will be bringing their fun live show to Australia performing three shows in New South Wales this October, including a single launch party alongside friends FOLEY and YAHYAH.

TSENATE ANNOUNCES NEW SINGLE ‘ WORST THING I COULD DO’
“worst thing i could do” is one of TSENATE’s most lyrically complex tracks, drawing inspiration from artists like Faye Webster , Clairo, and boygenuis. This track reflects the indie musicians TSENATE is drawn to and highlights her exploration beyond her familiar R&B and Neo-Soul sound.
New Zealand R&B songbird TSENATE embarks on her journey in Melbourn and unveiled her latest single “worst thing i could do” produced by Christian Tjandrawinata.
Listen to ‘worst thing i could do’ here
While she has thoroughly enjoyed these genres, she sought to venture into and experiment with a variety of different sounds, adding a fresh dimension to her music. “I think it’s super important for me to play around with different vocal and production styles,” she explains. “Especially so early into my career, I think it’s good to explore different avenues and see what best suits me and my overall vision.”
‘worst thing i could do’ displays the ways in which TSENATE struggles to move on from things of the past. “I used to seriously think that falling in love was a waste of energy or time if it didn’t ‘last’ or if it wasn’t a ‘forever’ thing,” she reflects. “I’ve grown to understand that there’s something super beautiful about appreciating a period of time with someone and, regardless of whether it ends up working out or not, that it was something I was meant to experience.”
This track perfectly tells how two seemingly conflicting emotions can coexist, revealing the complexity of her journey through love and healing.
With new music on the horizon and more tunes coming soon..
