1 Drop Nation release funk-filled tune, ‘Supernova’ featuring Laughton Kora

Bursting with upbeat rhythms and high-energy funk, ‘Supernova’ is a dynamic, electrifying track that was made to be performed live.

Otauhtaui’s 1 Drop Nation have today released their first single of 2025, ‘Supernova’ featuring local legend, Laughton Kora.

Listen to ‘Supernovahere

Bursting with upbeat rhythms and high-energy funk, ‘Supernova’ is a dynamic, electrifying track that was made to be performed live.

Created during a rehearsal when 1 Drop Nation was messing around, the song took on a life of its own, and the band decided to run with it.

“We took the song to Wellington and collaborated with Laughton Kora to make the magic that it has become,” says Kanei Johnson, the group's lead vocalist.

1 Drop Nation’s guitarist Paerau Hemopo, who wrote the track, says, “We wanted to create a funky tune connecting the universe. It’s a love story that speaks of a journey through the cosmos. The light from a supernova can light up a whole galaxy, much brighter than the sun. So it is to say, ‘I will be your light in the Darkness.’

We hope our listeners think of what is beyond, and having each other's back while embarking towards the unknown.”

‘Supernova’ comes hot on the heels of the uplifting and timely tune, ‘Proud’, which the six-piece released in late November 2024. Watch the video for ‘Proud’ here.

1 Drop Nation has become one of Aotearoa’s must-see acts with an electrifying live show that engages the crowd from start to finish. The band released their 5-star-reviewed, self-titled debut album in December 2022, leading to their second album MOMENT IN TIME in 2023.

The band is made up of Derin Thompson (keyboards, backing vocals / Nga Tai Ki Torere), Paerau Hemopo (guitar / Ngāi Tahu, Te Arawa, Ngā Puhi), Burke Goffe (guitar / Ngā Puhi, Te Ātiawa) Marc Hansen (drums), Dru Sione (bass, backing vocals), and Kanei Johnson (lead vocals / Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Kahungunu).

Catch the band next opening the mainstage of Electric Avenue in Christchurch on Friday February 21 at 2.30pm.

Tāmaki Makaurau-based indie folkstress Greta O’Leary has today shared her hypnotic ode to longing and surrender, dark and light - with new single ‘Prelude’.

Gently placing us in the now, Greta O’Leary is kicking off 2025 with the quiet drawing in of finger-picked guitars, tender vocals, eerie instrumentation, and a rolling rhythm section. Her latest offering, ‘Prelude’, is a subtle and unravelling reflection on physical form, place and belonging, and surrendering to what is.

“It’s a signifier of one side of life ending and another beginning,” says Greta.  “‘Prelude’ is the beginning.”

In 2024, Greta released two enthralling singles, ‘Baby I’m A Singer’ and ‘Baptised At The Desktop Computer’. Both songs saw momentous success; appearing in RadioScope Alt (the latter of which peaked at #1) and Official Aotearoa Music Charts; captivating the Student Radio Network (each reaching #1 on the SRN Top 10); alongside support from the likes of RNZ and RollingStone AU/NZ.

Now accompanied by ‘Prelude’, the talented artist takes the listener through the inner workings of her creative world. What’s more, ‘Prelude’ hints at a bigger project on the horizon and offers a subtle reflection of where Greta’s sound is at. “It’s a meeting of soft, finger-picked folk, and dark, heavier production. A merging of old and new worlds,” she says.

The gorgeous new track was brought to life alongside an all-star team of instrumentalists Cass Basil, Alastair Deverick, Callum Passells, and producer Jol Mulholland at the LAB Studios in Tāmaki Makaurau.

Also released today is a gritty, lo-fi, and raw self-directed music video, created alongside Adam Rohe (DOP). Further capturing the intimate, candid, and compelling nature of ‘Prelude’, the stunning new video was filmed through the hand-cut rail tunnels of Taranaki, a historic theatre, and contains clips from western Te Ika-a-Māui / the North Island.

WEST AUCKLAND’S DOUBLE PARKED EMBODY THE ESSENCE OF NEW ZEALAND SUMMER ON LATEST SINGLE, ‘DOPAMINE’

Following up their epic November single ‘Scars / Sober’, West Auckland “post surf” five-piece Double Parked have dropped their latest single, ‘Dopamine’.  A feel-good release of summertime happy hormones, ‘Dopamine’ embodies the blissed-out, laidback essence of a quintessential New Zealand summer.

The band use unpredictable Aotearoa weather as an analogy for seasonal mood swings, with lyrics like “when you’re not around the skies are a cloudy grey, when I’m feeling down, you’re the sunshine on my face”.

Where last single ‘Scars / Sober’ took listeners on a thrilling emotional journey, ‘Dopamine’ evokes the familiar feeling of an eternal lazy summer Sunday. With serene guitar plucks set against soothing vocals, (Tom Purdie) sings on the hazy hook, “when I wake up next to you, i don't wanna do anything else, and i don't have to / sometimes I’m at war with me, shit’s getting old, my bed’s getting cold, but you’re my dopamine.

“The song started from a jam, and my dad started humming a melody with those words, “sunshine on my face”, then I went home and wrote the rest of the lyrics,” the band detail of the track's background.

“I think the fact that the music came first, and the lyrics came second, the lyrics are really just a verbalisation of the feeling of the song. It’s about that juxtaposition between the highs and lows of life, and how you can’t really have one without the other.”

‘Dopamine’ rounds off a huge year for Double Parked, off the back of the cult following amassed from the bands renowned, rowdy live performances and 2023 debut EP Lost in the Groove. This year, the boys have released successful singles including ‘Scars / Sober’, 'Leopard Print Coat’ and ‘Living Room Floor’, embarked on opening sets for Australian surf punk band Lazy Ghost and Christchurch indie-rockers The Butlers, nearly sold out their own headline show at Auckland’s Galatos, and brought their infectious Westie charm to the stage this Summer with festival sets at Le Currents.

Labelling their distinctive sound as self-described “post-surf”, Double Parked are redefining the traditional surf rock subgenre for a new generation, making music that’s quintessentially rooted in New Zealand surf culture while pulling from a melting pot of global influences from psychedelic, to punk, reggae, dub, indie-pop, and much more.

Keep up with Double Parked on Spotify, Instagram and Facebook.
