BETH TORRANCE 'Your Favourite' (EP)

Tāmaki Makaurau singer-songwriter Beth Torrance releases her new EP, Your Favourite, out now, through Particle Recordings. A hooky, bittersweet, indie rock collection about new connections, overthinking, escapism, and the strange thrill of wanting to be known.

Tāmaki Makaurau singer-songwriter Beth Torrance releases her new EP, Your Favourite, out now, through Particle Recordings. A hooky, bittersweet, indie rock collection about new connections, overthinking, escapism, and the strange thrill of wanting to be known.

Your Favourite marks a new chapter for Torrance, whose earlier work moved through intimate indie-folk, delicate guitars, and poetically honest songwriting. The four-track EP doesn’t leave that world behind: it turns it up a notch. Written from the outset with a full band recording in mind, the EP captures the feeling of standing on the edge of something new: a new city, a new sound, a new connection, a new version of yourself.

At the centre of the release is the focus single, Your Favourite, a fuzzy, magnetic indie rock track about wanting to be someone’s first choice. The song leans into the bright and chaotic excitement that comes with a new attraction: the moment when someone lets you into their world and suddenly you find yourself wanting to be part of every corner of it. It’s poppy, direct, and full of nervous energy, balancing sweetness with the kind of self-awareness that comes from thinking a little too much and feeling everything at once.

Across the EP, Torrance builds a world of almost-connections. The previous single, Suzy May, is punch-drunk and sparkling, circling the person you know but don’t really know, though perhaps want to know. I’ve Got A Record, the first song ever written for the EP, acts as a bridge between Torrance’s earlier work and this new era, beginning in a softer emotional space before opening into something wider and more band-driven. The closing track, Don’t Get Weird, is the EP’s emotional climax and the most cinematic moment: a road-trip song of sorts, full of volatility, humour, longing, and the untethered feeling of being in motion with nowhere fixed to land.

That sense of movement carries through the making of the record. Composed, produced, and written by Beth Torrance, Your Favourite features Torrance on vocals, Jordan Lim (Preacher) on drums, and John Heywood (Alex G) on bass. Recorded and mixed at Bigpop’s Drake Street Studios by Jacob E. Rush and mastered by Howard Rogers, the EP brings grit to Torrance’s natural melodic instinct, pairing her lyrical softness with a solid and tight rhythm section.

For Beth Torrance, Your Favourite is not just a sonic shift, but a fuller picture of who she is becoming as a songwriter, musician, and performer. The songs still carry her poetic sensibility, but now they hit harder, further engage you and hold a stronger sonic space.

Beth Torrance will celebrate the release of Your Favourite with an EP release show at Whammy Bar, Auckland on August 1st; tickets from UnderTheRadar.

SAME NAME CONFUSION ANNOUNCES UPCOMING ALBUM 'SNC'

Enigmatic band Same Name Confusion is making a return, and doing it their way. After a multi-year hiatus, the Auckland / Melbourne-based group is returning with their second full-length album, SNC.

Enigmatic band Same Name Confusion is making a return, and doing it their way. After a multi-year hiatus, the Auckland / Melbourne-based group is returning with their second full-length album, SNC. Born across distance and refined over time with intentional, "slow" songwriting, the record captures a groove-focused, Randy Newman inspired record with a knack for finding the playful, romantic (and occasionally absurd) beauty in everyday life.

“I’m just singing about my ordinary life, the most ordinary things. And I’m talking about these things in the way that comes natural to me. I’m usually poking fun at myself and the people around me… that’s how I am in real life too.” (Luke Courtney)

“For me this record is a groove record. It’s meant for dancing or at the very least tapping your toes with a grin.” (Andrej Radosavljevic)

SNC is a trans-Tasman collaboration, with formerly Christchurch, then Wellington co-writers Luke Courtney and Andrej Radosavljevic now split between Auckland and Melbourne, bouncing demos back and forth for months before finally bringing it all together with a full band. With songs written over a span of years, Luke and Andrej would go through a number of iterations before bringing it to the band where long-time collaborator Josh Dominikovich translated MIDI drum grooves into real life, and new recruits Arran Cargill-Brown, Logan McAllister, Ensai August and Dayle Jellyman helped create basslines and other parts that served the song. Finally, the band spent 3 days recording with James Goldsmith at The Surgery Studio in Wellington, where they tracked all the songs live, in the room, with as little overdubs as possible to make sure it felt as organic as they could.

“One of the things I hoped to capture on this record, other than great songs, was for the listener to feel like they were in the room with us and I think James did a great job of that.” (Andrej Radosavljevic)

SNC will be released in two parts. Side A is simply the first four tracks on the album, and a chance for listeners to settle into a big chunk of the record right off the bat. Serving as the centerpiece for the first act, This Family Counts Calories is a song born at a K Road gym - a self-deprecating reflection on Luke’s experiences as a first-time gym-goer alongside the stark contrast of having a partner who is a powerlifter.

“She has to watch her calories when she’s coming up to a powerlifting competition. But I’m always trying to get more calories in, trying to put some meat on these bones! Now I’ll read the back of the cans of baked beans to find the one with the most calories!”

Built on a booming, looping bassline and a driving, straightforward groove, the sparse arrangement provides a blank canvas that allows for filling in with shoegazey/dreampop guitar textures and for Luke to “croon along with my silly gym-observations”.

SNC is the second full-length album from Same Name Confusion, and will be released on September 25th via Winegum Records. SNC (Side A), featuring the first four tracks from the forthcoming album is out now, alongside pre-orders for the full album.

Same Name Confusion was formed in Ōtautahi Christchurch in 2016 by singer Luke Courtney and guitarist Andrej Radosavljevic. Both engineering students at the University of Canterbury, they met when Courtney asked around for someone who could play guitar solos on his existential rock songs. Their DIY debut album followed soon after.

Ten years on, Same Name Confusion continues as a songwriting project between the pair. Courtney lives in Auckland and is in the early stages of a PhD in philosophy of education. Radosavljevic lives in Melbourne and is making short films. For each, Songwriting happens in stolen moments, in bursts of inspiration. Demos are refined slowly, iteratively, and often despite heated disagreements. A second album, titled SNC, is the result of several years of this slow trans-tasman collaboration.

With Two for Two charting at No. 5 on the Hot 20 Aotearoa Singles Chart and No. 18 on the Official Top 20 Aotearoa Albums Chart, Caru and Brandn Shiraz continue to cement themselves as one of Aotearoa's most exciting collaborations. Following their 2026 Aotearoa Music Award win for Best Electronic Artist, the duo now present their first official music video together, extending the world of Two for Two beyond the dancefloor, as a live session for listeners at home.

Directed by New York-based Blaze Bailey, the video captures the live energetic synergy between their producer-DJ and MC dynamic. Set against the lush landscape of the Auckland Domain and framed by the mighty tōtara trees on a significant whenua in their hometown, the video starts off with their title-track Two for Two, joined by the renowned multi-instrumentalist and jazz musician Joe Kaptein.

The video quickly shifts gears with the EP's opening track, Speaking My Mind, an expansive introduction rooted in the classic sounds of early-2000s 2-step garage. The track provides the perfect platform for Brandn Shiraz to effortlessly showcase his lyrical dexterity and commanding delivery, creating a striking contrast against the calm, open greenery of the Auckland Domain. The live session also offers an exclusive preview of the unreleased track Dreaming, with Caru reimagining the original instrumental from Scribe and P-Money into a stuttering grime anthem, laying the foundation for a razor-sharp freestyle from Shiraz.

Two for Two is a five-track EP rooted in the rich lineage of UK dance music, drawing on the sounds of UK garage, broken beat, UK funky, dubstep and more. Across the project, the duo weave these influences into a contemporary club-focused sound, whilst maintaining an immersive headphone listening experience, anchored by Caru’s detailed production and Shiraz's distinctive vocal delivery. Inspired by his North London family connections and the energy of Ragga MCs and Grime artists, Shiraz brings a uniquely personal perspective to the EP, bridging UK sound system culture with a fresh Aotearoa voice. Together, Caru and Brandn Shiraz reimagine these foundations through a modern lens, creating a project that connects dancefloors across continents and generations.

The Two for Two EP is supported by a nationwide tour, playing their songs live and direct on dancefloors across Aotearoa. Working alongside the soundsystems, promoters and DJs who have supported Caru & Shiraz every step of the way, the tour will be presented by Garage Sale, GoldTooth, Norty Club Collective and 103 Soundsystem – a selection of respected and leading dance music figureheads in Aotearoa

Each section is followed by open Q&A, giving attendees the chance to bring their own questions to experienced guests.

“Lorraine Barry was a mentor to me for over eight years and someone I always turned to for advice, as well as being a great friend. It’s an honour to carry on the work she was so passionate about in artist development, on behalf of the MMF.”  - Mikee Carpinter

Troubles (with Donson PK) - EDYONTHEBEAT

Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland producer Edward Liu (EDYONTHEBEAT) releases "Troubles" with Donson PK, the latest single from his second album im just a producer, out 12 March 2027.

The third single from EDYONTHEBEAT's sophomore album

'im just a producer'

Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland producer Edward Liu (EDYONTHEBEAT) releases "Troubles" with Donson PK, the latest single from his second album im just a producer, out 12 March 2027 via New Zealand distributor DRM.

It reunites Edy with Donson PK, the Auckland vocalist he last worked with on "Coastin'," which reached No. 12 on the Hot 20 Aotearoa Singles chart earlier this year.

About the track

"Troubles" is a soulful, gospel-leaning R&B/Pop record with an unmistakably New Zealand sound. It's built on a conversational structure and sits in the same lane as Six60 and Stan Walker: warm, direct, and made to be sung back. The song is about being there for someone through everything they're carrying, staying present in the hard moments rather than looking for the exit.

Edy wrote it with longtime collaborators HALES and JUGA, and it came together fast. Donson's vocal did the rest, tracked in a single short session.

"It's about sitting through the hard moments instead of running."

— EDYONTHEBEAT

im just a producer

"im just a producer" is the second album from EDYONTHEBEAT.

Eleven tracks, each pairing Edy’s production with a different artist & collaborator. Features include Dinah Jane (ex-Fifth Harmony), Janine, Jaedyn Randell, Myshaan, Devin Velez, RISSA, HALES, JUGA, Verity, Donson PK, ELENA and Talia Perese. Mixed by Edward Liu and mastered by John Garcia.

Edy has spent years building international collaborations from Aotearoa without the cover of a label or a frontman - 170M+ streams, close to 500 credits, a 2025 Pacific Music Award for Best Producer, and viral TikTok livestreams that have pulled co-signs from the likes of Timbaland and Charlie Puth.

im just a producer now puts the producer’s name at the top for the first time.

Ten singles roll out across the campaign window from NZ Music Month May 2026 through to the album drop on the 12th March 2027.

SOULTI OPENS A CONVERSATION ON LONELINESS AND CONNECTION WITH NEW SINGLE "DUSK TIL DAWN"

Auckland electronic artist Soulti returns with her most vulnerable and powerful release to date, "Dusk Til Dawn", the third single from her forthcoming debut EP, Storm In a T-Cup.

"Dusk Till Dawn" out today to coincide with Matariki, a time of remembrance, renewal and hope.

Auckland electronic artist Soulti returns with her most vulnerable and powerful release to date, "Dusk Til Dawn", the third single from her forthcoming debut EP, Storm In a T-Cup.

Combining emotive songwriting, cinematic electronic production, and soulful vocals, the track explores an experience many people know but rarely talk about: feeling completely alone while surrounded by others.

Written after an experience of profound loneliness at a music festival and later shaped by the loss of a friend to suicide, "Dusk Til Dawn" explores the silent struggles many people carry beneath the surface. The song reflects on the disconnect that can exist between how we appear to the world and what we may be experiencing internally, even in moments surrounded by people, noise, and connection.

Ultimately, "Dusk Til Dawn" is a message of hope. It reminds us that from dusk till dawn, from our darkest moments into a new day, we can learn to show ourselves compassion, be there for one another, and remember that no matter how isolated we may feel, we are never truly alone.

"The song came from standing in a crowd of thousands of people and realising I had never felt more alone," says Soulti. "Festivals are often portrayed as places of connection and joy, but sometimes people are carrying grief, depression, anxiety, or self-doubt beneath the surface. I wanted to write something that acknowledged those feelings while also offering hope."

Blending cinematic electronic production with deeply human storytelling, the track captures the emotional tension between isolation and belonging. Moving between moments of vulnerability, tension, and hope, "Dusk Til Dawn" serves as a reminder that behind every smile, every social feed, or every crowded room may be a story we cannot see.

"One of the most important things I've learned - and am still learning - is that we never truly know what someone else is going through," Soulti explains. "I've had my own battles with anxiety, self-doubt, and escapism, and this song is a reminder to check in on your friends, to be honest when you're struggling, and to remember that none of us has to carry those burdens alone."

The release arrives at a time when conversations around mental health, loneliness, and wellbeing continue to grow across Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally. Rather than presenting answers, "Dusk Til Dawn" invites listeners into an honest conversation about belonging, vulnerability, and the importance of human connection.

Musically, the track showcases Soulti's signature blend of electronic pop, melodic bass influences, and heartfelt storytelling. It forms a key chapter within Storm In a T-Cup, a debut EP exploring resilience, self-discovery, and finding beauty within life's challenges.

Over recent years, Soulti has built a reputation as a dynamic live performer, seamlessly combining DJing, live vocals and original music at festivals including Soundsplash, Splore, AUM, Shipwrecked and Hamilton Gardens Arts Festival. She has collaborated with internationally acclaimed MC Tali and opened for Dutch psychedelic blues-rock trio My Baby, while continuing to develop her own distinctive blend of electronic music and heartfelt storytelling. As her career continues to grow, Soulti has forged connections with industry professionals across Canada, the United Kingdom and Europe, paving the way for international performances, new collaborations and the release of her single and debut EP while in the UK this summer.

Accompanying the release is an independently produced music video created alongside Auckland multimedia artist Rongotai Lomas. Shot over the course of one evening and into the early hours of the morning, the pair captured Auckland's contrasting moods across Karangahape Road, the downtown waterfront, ferry terminal, and skyline. Filmed and edited entirely by Michels and Lomas without a production crew, the video mirrors the emotional journey of the song, moving through moments of solitude, reflection, and hope as the city transitions from night towards dawn.

Together, the single and its visuals represent a significant artistic step forward for Soulti, reinforcing her commitment to creating music that connects through honesty, vulnerability, and shared experience.

To further support the song's message, 50% of proceeds from "Dusk Til Dawn" will be donated to mental health projects. More than simply raising awareness, the release aims to encourage open conversations around loneliness, anxiety, grief, and connection while giving back to organisations supporting people experiencing mental health challenges.

"If this song helps even one person feel a little less alone, or encourages someone to check in on a friend or ask for help themselves, then it's done what I hoped it would. Music has always helped me through difficult times, and I hope 'Dusk Til Dawn' can do the same for someone else."
