Long awaited medium-sized venue announced for Dunedin!

For many years there has been a desperate need to fill the void left by the closure of historical venues like Sammy’s. In an area with minimal noise restrictions, new venue ERRICK’S is set to catapult Dunedin back onto the touring act circuit.

A new 500 person capacity venue for touring acts will open in Dunedin on the 2nd December, 2023.

For many years there has been a desperate need to fill the void left by the closure of historical venues like

Sammy’s. In an area with minimal noise restrictions, new venue ERRICK’S is set to catapult Dunedin back

onto the touring act circuit.

Significant investment is being made to provide excellent performance facilities and logistical support

for promoters and artists. “We are going to make sure we have great sound production, staging,

backline lighting and audiovisuals,” said Ed Lobo. “We also have the added bonus of on-site luxury

accommodation for twelve people that artists and promoters will absolutely love,” he added.

The Lobo family (Mili, Michelle & Ed) will run the entire operation as a collective with Ed Lobo’s in-house

promotions company Ed & The Shadow Boys Productions looking after bookings and helping promoters

and artists deliver excellent quality entertainment through the venue.

The Lobo’s are experienced restaurant and bar owners and have put together numerous sell-out festival

events in recent years. Their festivals have hosted artists from Australia and Europe as well as popular

New Zealand and local acts; the most recent being The Black Seeds at a sold out Lobofest festival in

Dunedin earlier this year.

Whilst live music and touring bands are a big focus for the venue, ERRICK’S will also be designed to host

almost any type of function; from corporate and conference to weddings and celebrations.

Venue owner Mili Lobo-Oxley understands that the days of single-purpose venues of this size in New

Zealand no longer exist. “We knew right from the start that if the venue was going to be sustainable long

term, it had to be able to handle a broad range of functions”, said Mili. “One of the fantastic aspects of the

location is the unique luxury on-site accommodation as well. It can be used to host touring musicians,

guest speakers, wedding guests or any travelling guests”, she added.

As hospitality specialists, the Lobo’s are experienced, well organised and know how to provide excellent

catering, beverage and event management. A promoters, Ed & The Shadow Boys Productions have etched

out a reputation as trailblazers in support of the Dunedin and New Zealand music scenes. They are

perfectly placed to ensure that ERRICK’S is a fantastic success for both punters and the artistic community

alike.

The venue will open with a superb New Zealand act on 2nd December 2023, and is now actively seeking

bookings from promoters and artists.

DEBUT SINGLE ‘See You Again' ….

A sibling duo known as 'The Mitis' are breaking the mould, with their Pacific flavour and redefining the country music scene.  Country music and Polynesian families may seem like an unlikely pairing, but with their unique blend of traditional and modern influences, they have captured the attention and admiration of industry legends and are set to make a lasting impact.

Sonny wrote this heartfelt song, 'See You Again' reflecting on his close relationship with his grandpa, and how much he misses him. And his reflections of the missed milestones of his life, without his grandpa being here to experience them with him.

From a young age, Sonny and Tiana were surrounded by the soulful sounds of country legends, listening to their mother's cherished cassette tapes of Glen Campbell and Johnny Cash.  This musical foundation ignited a lifelong passion for the genre. Drawing inspiration from their Polynesian heritage and infusing it into their country melodies, 'The Mitis' have developed a distinct and captivating musical style that resonates with audiences both young and old.

What sets The Mitis apart is their ability to reimagine classic country hits with a refreshing twist. Their innovative covers of timeless tracks like "Jolene" and "Blue Bayou" caught the attention of industry icons Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt, who were captivated by their unique interpretation. With their ukulele as a key instrument, they seamlessly incorporate a Polynesian element, creating a harmonious fusion of genres that is entirely their own.

No strangers to the music scene, 'The Mitis' have honed their craft through years of experience, gaining praise and recognition along the way. Their journey has taken them to many  national country music awards and Tiana to the Star Search in Samoa. They have competed against the best and showcased their remarkable talent, leaving audiences captivated with their heartfelt performances.

While country music might not typically dominate the music radar in New Zealand, 'The Mitis' are on a mission to change that. With their refreshing sound and undeniable charisma, this dynamic duo is poised to make an indelible mark on country music.

LOST TRIBE AOTEAROA RELEASE WAIATA ANTHEM ‘ĀIO’, THE TE REO VERSION OF THEIR HIT SONG ‘IRIE’

Today (Friday September 1) conscious roots rockers Lost Tribe Aotearoa (Tūwharetoa) release Waiata Anthem, ‘Āio’ featuring Rei + accompanying music video. ‘Āio’ is Lost Tribe Aotearoa’s first ever te reo Māori waiata, and is a version of the first song the band ever released, ‘Irie’.

Today (Friday September 1) conscious roots rockers Lost Tribe Aotearoa (Tūwharetoa) release Waiata Anthem, ‘Āio’ featuring Rei + accompanying music video.

‘Āio’ is Lost Tribe Aotearoa’s first ever te reo Māori waiata, and is a version of the first song the band ever released, ‘Irie’.

In June 2018 Lost Tribe Aotearoa (LTA) won Mai FM's Big Break Competition with 'Irie' which went on to reach  #7 in the NZ Charts.

Lost Tribe Aotearoa share “we are super excited about the release of Āio as this song was the first song we created as a band.  There is something special in the fact that this will be our first 100% te reo song.  There is a lot of history that comes with this song and history is still being made from it.

This  is our first waiata Maori, but is definitely not the last.  We feel this song is really going to push us to write more songs in te reo and also help our own journeys into learning our language at a deeper level.

We want to see this song act as a catalyst for all Māori old and young to believe they can achieve their dreams.  We know so many whanau who are suppressing their talents who need to take the plunge and show the world.  A few years ago many of us in the band would never have dreamed of releasing a single song let alone one in our native tongue.”

The accompanying music video Directed by LTA long time collaborator Mumu Moore outlines the band's journey featuring past music videos cut in with new footage from the studio when recording ‘Āio’.

LTA worked in collaboration with the Raglan Horn Conglomerate and Rei on this track - bringing new dimensions to the te reo version.

“Revisiting this song for a second time in the studio, the feel of the song did change -  it feels much more powerful in terms of its delivery, we also added our horn section (the Raglan Horn Conglomerate) which really puts the cherry on top in terms of sound.

We were also really excited about bringing in the talents of Rei who is a featured artist on this track.  We have followed his mahi for years…to see his creativity expressed on the track is amazing.  He also had some great input into the creative process when recording was taking place.  He slotted into the tribe perfectly.”

To translate the lyrics LTA worked with Te Māngai Pāho who enabled them to undertake the 'TANIWHA Māori Music Wanaga' run by Matiu Sadd and Sam Taylor.

“Sam Taylor did his interpretation of the original song” share the band “we then went to the studio to demo and test the lyrics and tested these with our Mātanga reo Hani Totorewa and ended up with the final product.

Probably the most surprising aspect of the song was the actual translation used for 'Irie'.  We were uncertain which route this would go down when translating and had a real risk of being the wrong word.  But when we first saw the kupu Āio we knew this was the word to embody the meaning of the song.  The word itself is used to describe a sense of calmness or peace which really resonated with us.

The meaning of the song also changes a bit as te reo is such a metaphorical language, but the overall themes we always leave up to the listener as each individual hears different messages.”

‘Āio’ was created for Waiata Anthems. “Being on this Waiata Anthems platform is a dream come true.  Only a few years ago would only be a pipe dream, but with initiatives such as Waiata Anthems, has brought our language to the forefront of the music industry and now is very common to hear on mainstream radio.  We have followed Waiata Anthems since its inception and are absolutely blown away that we get to participate.”

Lost Tribe Aotearoa are a family-based band who share conscious messages through their lyrics.  Their sound is an eclectic mix of roots, dub, rock, ska and blues and they are well known for their high energy live shows and the contagious uplifting vibes their music evokes.

‘Lost & Found’a five track EP featuring hit singles ‘Reflections’, ‘Lost Generation 2.0’, ‘Legacy’ ‘Shaka’ and ‘Strange Things’ released in May this year.

100% GOOD is thrilled to announce Home Brew will be performing two headline shows in Wellington & Auckland this coming October to celebrate the reissue of the band’s seminal self-titled album Home Brew.

It’s been over a decade since the release of Home Brew, an uncompromising, anti-establishment snapshot of honesty, self-reflection and disillusionment. With that honesty, Tom Scott, Haz Beats and Lui Gumaka created the clearest picture of the 2010s zeitgeist yet - somehow blending hip-hop with Trade Me, Pak ‘N’ Save, John Key and whatever drug “killed the dinosaurs”.

Rising to equal parts greatness and infamy, the double album split into two discs “Light” and “Dark”, has now become synonymous with hip-hop in Aotearoa. Its impact was followed by a long list of successful musical endeavours from the members - including the critically acclaimed and award winning Avantdale Bowling Club, Team Dynamite and @Peace - alongside fostering multiple artists under the YGB label.

Home Brew (11th Anniversary Edition) is a faithful reissue for a fanbase that has stayed loyal to the project since inception, for nearly two decades. The 10th Anniversary Edition 11th Anniversary Edition will be available on CD and - for the first time since the ultra-rare 2013 pressing - a 2xLP 180g gatefold Vinyl.

Both feature brand new & reimagined illustrations from Guy Brock - the artist behind the original iconic cover, and are remastered by the original mastering engineer Ben Lawson.

PROTEINS OF MAGIC RETURNS WITH THE DARK INCANTATIONS OF: “FLESH IT OUT”

Operating in the same dark and subversive corners where Fever Ray, Jenny Hval or Björk may find solace, “Flesh it Out” is a track that arrives shrouded in a mystique all its own, with a strident confidence to defy conventions.

THE SECOND SINGLE FROM A NEW EP: ‘ANGEL HIEROGLYPHICS’
- COMING EARLY 2024

"Flesh It Out” is the new single by NZ / Nashville artist Proteins of Magic, released on 31st of August by New Zealand imprint Particle Recordings.

LISTEN HERE

Operating in the same dark and subversive corners where Fever RayJenny Hval or Björk may find solace, “Flesh it Out” is a track that arrives shrouded in a mystique all its own, with a strident confidence to defy conventions.

Written while gazing into the flickering flames of an open fire in Nashville, Proteins of Magic found herself caught in the daze of a flashback in which she had seen a young couple openly having sex during the day on the beach in Aotearoa / New Zealand. As Kelly Steven AKA Proteins of Magic remembers:

The hope and the idealism, the youthful sheen on their skin, being unaware of what life lies ahead for them. That is what triggered the start of the lyrical process. I think the song lays out an emotionally treacherous life for them, a day in the life spanning 10 years and 2min 52 seconds.”

Surrounding surrealistic lyrics with hex-like incantations, tribal rhythms, sinister synthesiser trills, and haunting woodwind sections, PoM creates an unsettling ambience and intimidating presence to send shivers. “If I give you a smile will you resuscitate me?” she coos through gritted teeth. Building to a hypnotic climax, “Flesh It Out” couples brooding instrumentals with a litany of foreboding vocal textures, each representing a disjointed voice of differing lost souls. Foreshadowing a bleak future, these spectres emerge to erode the wide eyed innocence of youth and replace it with existential questions and hollow false promises.

As its title may suggest, “Flesh It Out” was born from within a jam to evoke a spirit that is discernibly raw and immediate, before being layered and moulded repeatedly to find its current recorded form. The finished song spawns, regenerates and severs over its three-minute course, summoning a sense of self determination out of the chaos.

Directed by Ranger Garrett, “Flesh It Out” arrives with an art-house style official video intended to capture a ‘day in the life’ in Nashville. Showing another side of the fluorescent glitz and glamour of the music city, it was shot around various alternative landmarks using a vintage Sony PMW-F3 and Sony Handycam DCR-SX45, including footage of the Dragon Park that was featured in Harmony Korine’s Gummo.

“I liked the idea of it being lo-fi and raw, and I wanted the filming to be like the recording process,” says Kelly of the video. “Less formulated. The cameras were actually literally held together with tape and things were falling apart. I wanted it to be a ‘day in the life’ in Nashville, in a manic, irregular, fractured way.”

"Flesh It Out" captures the creative intuition of Proteins of Magic, juxtaposing the realities between Aotearoa / NZ and Tennessee, opening a portal where the past and present coalesce .

Her upcoming EP 'Angel Hieroglyphics' will be released in February / March 2024.

Upcoming live shows -

5 September -  7:30pm - 8.00pm - La La Land - BIGSOUND (Brisbane)
7 September - 8:30pm - 9.00pm - La La Land - BIGSOUND (Brisbane)

Debut EP ‘Perfect Movie Scene’ charts the artistic evolution of youthful Indie-Pop band Borderline. This collection of songs takes you on a journey showcasing the band’s growth as songwriters, musicians and as individuals navigating the life changing shift from school to the outside world. From ‘Spinning’ echoing in High School hallways to the final songs on the EP that have reverberated in sold-out venues, Borderline’s EP is testament to a remarkable progression.

LISTEN HERE

Playing together for 10 years is no mean feat when you are still teenagers but bandmates Matthew McFadden (lead guitar) and Jackson Boswell (drums / BVs) have done just that. Lead vocalist and guitarist Ben Glanfield joined in 2021 (after winning the 2020 Rockquest solo/duo category with his sister Brody) and this year, Max Harries - who the band met at music school - became Borderline’s new bass player.

The EP’s lead single ‘This Is Not Love’ boasts an infectious groove with a bassline that draws inspiration from funk and disco. The powerful vocals seamlessly meld with a perfect combination of guitars and synth lines, defining its place at the intersection of indie and pop.

The track reflects the fun we had as a band in the creative process of writing the song,” says McFadden, while Glanfield shares “the song's lyrics stem from the realisation that relationships can be complex and conflicted emotional experiences, often presenting situations that may not be as they initially seem.”

Produced by Christian Tjandrawinata, ‘This Is Not Love’ was mixed by Nic Manders and mastered by Vivek Gabriel.

Catch Borderline live as they head off on their first South Island Tour in late September playing shows in Dunedin, Queenstown and Christchurch, thanks to support from the New Zealand Music Commission’s Aotearoa Touring Programme.
